  • Cena’s wrestling experience taught him to adapt to volatile environments, advising others to “know the room” in tough situations.
  • Cena remains humble about his role in the Fast & Furious franchise, expressing gratitude and respect for the series’ legacy.

Though he only joined the Fast & Furious franchise in 2021, portraying Jakob Toretto in Fast 9, John Cena certainly has some thoughts on the rivalry between his two co-stars, Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. Cena recently reprised his role as Dominic Toretto’s younger brother in Fast X, where his character met a harrowing end, seemingly signifying Cena’s departure from the long-running action juggernaut. Though the feud between Johnson and Diesel started long before Cena’s arrival, the WWE megastar isn’t surprised in the least that it even happened in the first place.

Appearing on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepherd podcast to discuss life, wrestling, and show business, Cena opened up about the feud between Diesel and Johnson. When asked about the rumors of there being a beef between the two stars, Cena commented on their alpha status, pulling a line from Highlander out of his back pocket. Check out his comment below.

“There’s certainly rumors about that. I can’t deny that. You have two very alpha, driven people. You get two, there can only be one.”

John Cena’s Wrestling Experience Allowed Him to Adapt to Volatile Environments

Having immersed himself in the culture of professional wrestling upon his arrival into the WWE, Cena himself is no stranger to being around strong alpha personalities. He would go on to comment on how he was around wrestling veterans during his formative years and spoke on the importance of being able to adapt in any situation. His advice is to “know the room.”

“Man, you gotta remember I got dropped into a locker room where [we have] generational vets. ‘What’d your dad do?’ ‘Wrestle.’ ‘What’d your granddad do?’ ‘Wrestle.’ I’ve been in that environment; know the room and just kind of adapt to what’s going on.”

The feud between Johnson and Diesel reportedly started in 2016, after ‘The Rock’ took to social media during his final week of shooting on Fast 8, also known as The Fate of the Furious. While Johnson had high praise for his female co-stars, he called some of his male colleagues unprofessional “candy asses,” and while he didn’t name names, Diesel took exception to the statement. The two have since squashed their rivalry, with Diesel calling his motivations behind their feud nothing more than “tough love.”

Fast and Furious Director Breaks Silence on His Sudden Fast X Departure

Director Justin Lin has spoken about his shocking departure from Fast X almost two years after he left the production.

Speaking on his arrival into the franchise with his role in Fast 9, John Cena remained humble about the experience. He likened it to being “invited into someone’s home,” giving respect to a series no one ever thought would continue for as long as it has.

“I’m being invited into someone’s home, into someone’s family. And regardless of how they look physically in comparison to another human being, this is one IP that has had nine installments and it’s an action movie — that’s rarefied air. At the very least, there has to be respect for that.”

Cena, who is currently starring in Amazon Prime Video’s Ricky Stanicky, says his goal was never to overshadow either Johnson or Diesel with his addition to the Fast & Furious franchise. “I’m not trying to get the sandbox. That’s not my thing,” he said. “I’m grateful for what you’ve given me, I just want to be the best firetruck I can.”
