Director Wes Ball has revealed an intriguing detail about the home media release of his upcoming Planet of the Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Speaking with Ape Nation, Ball has revealed that the Blu-ray and DVD will include a version of the movie made up of “the raw dailies” and including zero VFX. Meaning fans will be able to watch the actors’ leap around in motion capture suits and see their performances before the magic of CGI is added by Weta.

“I’m doing a little thing for the DVD where you can watch the movie – the entire movie – with the raw dailies. I’m working on that, where you’ll be able to watch and see both the final [cut] and the raw dailies. You can see how close they get, what they do, and how they stitch everything together. It’s amazing, and you can just sit there and enjoy it.”

Ball is incredibly enthusiastic about this raw version of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and plans to also add some commentary alongside the movie’s VFX Supervisor, Erik Winquist.

“I’ll do some commentary over it with Erik [Winquist], our VFX [supervisor]. I think it’s gonna be great. For geeks like us, it’s gonna be a first. They’ve never seen this kind of thing. Some of the hardest stuff in VFX is how you get CG characters to interact with others. So we have a human girl hugging a CG ape and it’s like, ‘How do you do that?'”

This version of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes certainly sounds exciting and should provide something special for those who long to see what such a CGI-heavy movie looks like without the digital wizardry, as well as learn how such wizardry is achieved.
