I’m So Excited About This Netflix Thriller Ending A Frustrating 7-Year Drought After Canceled Movie 2 Months Ago

I'm So Excited About This Netflix Thriller Ending A Frustrating 7-Year Drought After Canceled Movie 2 Months Ago

Summary

  • Kathryn Bigelow is directing a new untitled Netflix movie set at the White House amidst a national crisis.
  • The director hasn’t released a film since
    Detroit
in 2017, further growing the hype surrounding her next project.
  • Bigelow previously worked on a movie called
    Aurora
for Netflix, but it was canceled.

Netflix is producing a film that will be directed by the award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow, and aside from the movie’s premise and impressive cast, I’m most excited by the fact that Bigelow is involved. Unfortunately, the upcoming film does not have a title (that we know of) as of the writing of this article since it is in its early development stages. However, Netflix has released some information regarding its premise and who is set to star in Bigelow’s next movie.

Kathryn Bigelow won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars in 2009 for
The Hurt Locker
, making her the first woman to win the award for Best Director.

The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso is in talks to star in the Oscar-winning director’s Netflix film, alongside Jared Harris, best known for his roles in Mad Men, The Crown, and Chernobyl. Basso and Harris are recent additions to the cast, while Netflix previously announced that Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson would play significant roles in Bigelow’s movie. Specific details concerning the plot and characters are being kept hush-hush, but Netflix has confirmed that it will take place at the White House during a national crisis. Even though the premise is quite vague (for now), Bigelow’s involvement has sold me on the film.

Kathryn Bigelow Making A Netflix Movie Is Very Exciting

Bigelow Has Won 2 Oscars

Almost seven years have passed since Kathryn Bigelow released her last filmDetroit — and I’m more than ready to see what she has in store for her next one. Some of the director’s movies have been controversial, like Zero Dark Thirty, which chronicled and dramatized the manhunt for Osama bin Laden. Nevertheless, Bigelow has never shied away from taking on controversial stories as she is a fantastic director (undoubtedly one of the best women filmmakers of all time) with a keen eye for brilliant action on the big screen.

Bigelow helming the mysterious Netflix action movie after almost seven years since the premiere of Detroit is what makes it highly anticipated. The plot doesn’t sound unique, and while the cast is amazing, Bigelow’s comeback is the project’s most intriguing aspect. Hopefully, the upcoming film can live up to the hype and compare to Bigelow’s previous movies.

Why The Hurt Locker Was So Controversial With War Veterans

While The Hurt Locker was praised by critics and won many awards in 2009, here’s why the film was so controversial with actual war veterans.

One Kathryn Bigelow Netflix Movie Was Already Scrapped

The Director Had Been Working On A Film Called Aurora

Before her new movie was announced in June 2024, Kathryn Bigelow had been working on a Netflix film that was sadly canceled. The foregone project was based on David Koepp’s 2022 novel Aurora, which centers around a worldwide power outage caused by a solar storm. Sadly, the adaptation never got off the ground and Bigelow stepped away, just in time for the director to start working on her exciting upcoming Netflix action movie.
