Although the latest offering of big beast action fell slightly short of beating Denis Villeneuve’s movie’s opening domestic box office, thanks to a strong international showing over the Easter weekend, Godzilla x Kong brought in a worldwide gross of $194 million. This was just above the $178 million global haul Dune: Part Two ended its opening weekend with.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continued a familiar trend of drawing out vastly different opinions between critics and audiences, with the film almost scoring a franchise low from the former and delivering a new high from the first three days of audience reviews. However, both sets of reviews have the common thread running through them – the opinion that the film is big, dumb and loud, which is exactly what fans want, even if it is also what most critics hate.

The stellar box office performance of the movie, which ended well above even the adjusted projections that began at a lowly $40-$44 million domestic total – the film ended up taking more than $80 million – suggests that Adam Wingard’s hopes to add a third titanic clash to his slate of MonsterVerse offerings could become a reality in the near future.

A Godzilla x Kong Sequel is Already on Adam Wingard’s Mind

Despite Japan’s biggest export being the lead name in the franchise, many have noted that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is definitely more of a Kong movie. Director Adam Wingard addressed the possibility of more outings for the great beasts, should the green light be given. Speaking to Deadline, Wingard said of a potential sequel:

“We’ll see. It really depends on how the movie does. I think that there’s a lot of really cool ideas we have [about] where we would go with it. I’m open to it and excited for what the future brings.”

Although there is nothing certain when it comes to the future of even the biggest franchises, the idea of this being the last outing for the MonsterVerse is almost as unthinkable as the likes of Marvel Studios never making another movie. The franchise has found its niche in delivering the kind of popcorn blockbuster that fans of both Godzilla and Kong have always wanted.
