Angel Established Its Own Identity
Widely regarded by critics and fans as one of the greatest TV spin-off shows of all time, Angel was lauded for its mature and gritty tone and throughout its five season run delivered strong ratings from its devoted fanbase. By the time the final season rolled around, the drama had more than established itself from its companion series and audiences were thrilled when Buffy alum Spike (James Marsters) officially joined the crime-fighting gang, further blending the two universes.
Fans were both outraged and devastated when Angel ended on a major cliffhanger and was shockingly canceled, as it became the second highest-rated program to be canceled at the WB. Despite such an exceptional critical reception and strong ratings, Pushing Daisies was canceled after just two seasons, with show director Barry Sonnenfeld later attributing its cancellation to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike and its scripts; he called the episodes “too cute” and that they needed “more plot”, while acknowledging that ABC wanted family-friendly content.
9 Happy Endings (2011 – 2013)

Based on the spine-tingling Thomas Harris novels and their respective characters, the psychological horror series Hannibal stars the brilliant Mads Mikkelson as notorious cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter, who finds himself in a taut and intriguing cat-and-mouse game with ambitious FBI special investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as their complicated relationship is explored throughout the show’s three seasons.
Graham is initially clueless to the fact that Lecter is a cannibalistic killer infiltrating the FBI, and he must face his own dark instincts.
Hannibal Lecter Returns to the Screen
Series creator Bryan Fuller initially had plans for Hannibal to run for seven seasons and wanted to spend time covering all three of Harris’ gripping novels. Fuller notably drew inspiration from director David Lynch as well as Dario Argento and David Cronenberg, stating:
“‘What would David Lynch do with a Hannibal Lecter character? What sort of strange, unexpected places would he take this world?’ I’m a great admirer of his work and his aesthetic and his meticulous sound design. Diminishing Viewership Numbers
Good Girls dominated in ratings during its first season and attracted praise for its savvy humor, compelling storylines, and winning performances by its lead trio. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States, the third season of the show was reduced to 11 episodes and a fourth season was subsequently announced, which resulted in lower audience numbers.

Butterfield is joined by Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey in the refreshingly honest series, which ran for four seasons on Netflix.

Not only was Sex Education a major critical success and a ratings knockout, but the intimate dramedy was also celebrated for its sensitive handling of mature themes, its engaging writing, and dynamic cast performances. Within just its first month of release, the show was watched by over 40 million viewers and between September and October 2021, amassed 447,750,000 hours of streams.
Though Sex Education was never officially canceled by Netflix, the show shocked audiences when it said goodbye after four seasons at the height of its popularity, with writers feeling it was time to move on from the characters and storylines.
3 I Love Lucy (1951 – 1957)
Universally acclaimed as one of the most influential and trailblazing sitcoms of all time, I Love Lucy famously starred real-life Hollywood power couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, who live in New York City alongside their neighbors and close pals Ethel and Fred and constantly find themselves caught up in a slew of side-splitting hijinks and wacky misadventures.
The series also chronicles Lucy’s efforts to break into show business, with her desire for stardom frequently rearing its head while she’s in bandleader Ricky’s nightclub.
A Trailblazing Sitcom Classic
I Love Lucy swiftly became the most-watched TV program in the United States for four of its six sensational seasons, and by its second installment over 67% of the country tuned in to watch the trouble Lucy would land in week-after-week, with the 1952 season remaining the highest average rating for any single season in television to this day.
Audiences couldn’t get enough of the endearing chemistry between Lucille and Desi, yet their marriage behind-the-scenes contributed to the sitcom’s end.
By the show’s sixth season in 1957, the marriage between Lucille and Desi had turned sour and the strain of filming a half-hour and constant weekly rehearsals wore the couple out. The cancellation allegedly stems from tension between Costner and Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan as well as scheduling conflicts, and in May 2023 the network announced he would be leaving after the fifth season, which later became its final.
However, Costner has disputed claims he was to blame and has been vocal about wanting to do multiple additional seasons, but experience severe pushback from the network. When asked in May 2024 about chances of futures installments and if he would ever return to Yellowstone, Costner told GQ:
“I love that character. I love that world. I am a person that is very script oriented. And if the scripts aren’t there now, I need to know what I am. I want to make sure that the character lines up with what’s important to me too. And that’s pretty simple. That’s just between, again, Taylor and myself. Can we ever get there? I don’t know.”
1 Shadow and Bone (2021 – 2023)
Based on the best-selling fantasy series by Leigh Bardugo, the Netflix original drama Shadow and Bone helps bring the Grishaverse to life and centers on gifted cartographer and orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) as she uses her rare superpowers to help alter the trajectory of her war-plagued world. Alina must use her wondrous capabilities to help change the fate of the ongoing battle, and quickly finds herself on the radar of General Aleksander Kirigan (Ben Barnes), better known as the powerful The Black Heretic.
Devastated Fans Fought to Save the Fantasy Series
Fans all across the world couldn’t get enough of the spellbinding magical world and fierce lead heroine, and in 2024 Shadow and Bone was voted as the Fan Favorite Series of 2023 by Rotten Tomatoes, with both of its seasons earning critical praise. The fantasy show’s overwhelming popularity was not enough to save it from the chopping block, as it was canceled largely due to the writer’s strike and its expensive production costs.
While fans rallied and launched a passionate campaign entitled Save the Grishaverse to renew the show shortly after its November 2023 cancellation, racking up over 120,000 signatured in just four days to save it, the effort was not enough to overturn Netflix’s decision to cancel Shadow and Bone and as of now, its fate remains unchanged.
