Zack Snyder Wants Another Shot at Sucker Punch, Could This Be the Next Snyder Cut?

Zack Snyder Wants Another Shot at Sucker Punch, Could This Be the Next Snyder Cut?

Summary

  • Zack Snyder is considering re-editing his 2011 film
    Sucker Punch
to create a version he believes is the correct cut.
  • Snyder already has footage to improve the movie but needs permission and resources to make the changes.
  • Despite negative reviews, Snyder sees potential in enhancing the film with unseen footage for a new release.

Zack Snyder is no stranger to having a single version of many of his films, as there have been director’s cuts for some of his releases, such as Watchmen, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and his Netflix film Rebel Moon is soon to be added to that list. That’s why it should come as no surprise that, if necessary, Snyder has footage already shot that he believes will improve his 2011 fantasy action film Sucker Punch, which was initially released to poor reviews.

During an exclusive chat with Empire, Snyder was asked a wide range of questions about his career and if he would want to change anything about his films. It was then that he got very specific about Sucker Punch, expressing that it’s the only movie in his filmography that he would want to change significantly.

“The only movie I would change is Sucker Punch, because it never really got finished correctly. Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”

What exactly needs to be changed isn’t quite revealed by the director, but he does express that he has the footage already shot to do so. He just needs the permission and resources to get it done.

“I have the footage already shot: they just have to let me put it together. We ask every now and then. We have to ask again. I think there has to be a window when no-one’s got the movie.”

Sucker Punch Was Zack Snyder’s First Film Based on an Original Concept

Directed by Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Steve Shibuya, Sucker Punch followed a character named “Babydoll” (Emily Browning), a young woman who is committed to a mental institution by her stepfather. “Babydoll” soon finds herself entering a series of fantasy worlds as a coping strategy where she collects items she needs to escape. In this fantasy world, she and her fellow inmates are strong, experienced warriors who have what it takes to get out of their situation.

In addition to Browning, the film stars Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, and Oscar Isaac.

The director said he could have made the 2011 action fantasy Sucker Punch more obviously satirical.

Upon release, the film received negative reviews from critics, registering a 22 percent rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Specifically, some critics didn’t approve of its depiction of women, with some reviewers describing the film as misogynistic and expressing their concerns over its treatment of sexual violence against women. Box office was also not on par with his previous releases up to that point, grossing $89.8 million globally on an $82 million budget.

Snyder has previously discussed wanting to release a proper director’s cut of the movie, but complications over the film rights have made it difficult to release the proper cut. Snyder doesn’t necessarily have the rights to create a director’s cut, insinuating that there would be a conflict about creating another version of the film after the original cut has been sold. The movie was distributed by Warner Bros., a studio Snyder is no stranger to regarding proper director’s cuts given all the things he went through to get Zack Snyder’s Justice League released.

Zack Snyder will continue his
Rebel Moon
saga with
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
, which is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.
