Young Sheldon EP Explains The Biggest Change to Jim Parsons’ Older Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory Finale

Jim Parsons finally reprised his role as Sheldon Cooper for the series finale of Young Sheldon, the first time he has made an on-screen appearance as the character since The Big Bang Theory came to an end in 2019. But there was something a little different about this older version of Sheldon to when fans last saw him – his lack of comic book-inspired attire. This is something that executive producer Steve Molaro addressed in a recent interview with Glamour.

The Big Bang Theory saw the central character of Sheldon evolve over the course of its 12 seasons, and this new look at an older, wiser and more mature Sheldon is simply the next natural step in his evolution. Molaro explained:

“I remember us thinking we didn’t want Sheldon in the typical comic book store shirts. He’s a dad now, and we wanted him to be a little more mature. We figured Amy might have encouraged him to no longer wear that, or hidden them all. It was nice that he has on a long-sleeved sweater that he pushed up the sleeves a little bit to sort of evoke the old Sheldon vibes from Big Bang. That was intentional. Mayim was happy with what Amy was wearing and thought it was right. And those were Mayim’s personal glasses.”

In addition to this change in Sheldon, it did not escape anyone that the home shared by Sheldon and Amy is no longer their old apartment, even if some aspects of the new setting’s design were certainly meant to feel a little familiar to long-term fans. Molaro added:

“I would like people to understand that they’re not looking at the apartment, but the wood tones of the room are similar enough. Chuck [Lorre] was like, ‘We should show a house and make it clear they’ve moved,’ but there is absolutely a familiar feeling to it. The desk is wood, and the walls have a similar wood vibe. I’m glad we at least tried to make it clear.”

Will There Be a Sequel to The Big Bang Theory?

With the final season of Young Sheldon all wrapped up, and a new spin-off series, Georgie and Mandy’s First Wedding, now in production, Parsons and Bialik’s return to screens could be a hint that a rumored sequel series could still be coming at some point.

While creator Chuck Lorre has previously suggested that there is probably some kind of potential sequel waiting to be written, it seems that one star who is not in a rush to reprise their role in any such follow-up show is Kunal Nayyar, who played Raj in the series. Speaking to TV Line, Nayyar said:

“To be honest, it feels a little too soon. Can you do a [revival] only four years after your show ends? That’s not a reunion show; that’s just another season.”
