'You Need to Brace Yourselves'

Summary

  • Jack Quaid describes Season 4 of
    The Boys
as his favorite yet, praising the writers for fresh, shocking storylines.
  • Quaid warns fans to brace themselves at all times due to the unpredictable pacing of the show.
  • Quaid shares his desire for
    The Boys
to continue as long as possible, trusting showrunner Eric Kripke to end it on his own terms.

Season 4 of Prime Video’s The Boys, and one of the show’s stars, Jack Quaid, has nothing but praise for its triumphant, and imminent, return. Quaid plays Hughie, a powerless member of the titular Boys, who joins Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) mission for revenge against the corporate controlled ‘Superheroes’.

Quaid recently sat down with Collider to discuss the upcoming fourth season, and described it as his favorite so far. The actor said all praise goes to the writers, who manage to keep the show feeling fresh and increasingly shocking with each new season. As well as putting a fresh spin on the well-worn superhero genre, The Boys has garnered a reputation for its increasingly shocking plot lines and moments. Over the last three seasons, audiences have seen Homelander (Anthony Starr) laser beam a passenger plane in half, The Boys ram a speedboat into a whale, and ‘Herogasm’ (which is better left undescribed). Quaid said:

“I think that’s a real testament to the writers. It is never more of the same. They always find a way to somehow find new beats, and they never repeat themselves. It’s been really cool. This is my favorite season that we’ve ever done. The writers have topped themselves. There are those moments that are big and explosive and gross and insane, and there’s stuff that tops even the craziest stuff that we did last season, if you can believe that.”

Quaid was then asked about season 4’s pacing, more specifically, how long audiences will have to wait before they’re shocked by the events on screen. Quaid said, “you’re never safe” when watching The Boys, continuing:

“You need to brace yourselves at all times when watching the show. I don’t think there’s any other way to watch it. We all know the drill at this point.”

Jack Quaid Wants to Return for More Seasons of The Boys

The Boyshas already been renewed for season 5. But for die-hard fans, this still isn’t enough. During the interview, Quaid tiptoed around answering how long he would be involved with the show for. When asked about a production schedule for season 5, and if he’d return for more, Quaid said, “we wanna keep doing the show as long as possible.” The actor then gave slightly more, saying:

“Ideally, it lasts for as long as it possibly can. I definitely do think that I would like the show to go out on its own terms, when that happens. I would want it to be something that’s Eric [Kripke]’s intention. I think Eric is a genius. God, he’s so good at crafting a show and a world. So, whenever he wants to end it, I think that should be the end because I just trust him so much.”

Quaid also teased audiences about Hughie’s future in the show, saying he’s as scared as they are for the character’s safety. As well as it’s satirical indictment of American capitalism and the corruption of its political system, The Boys also features some bloody, gratuitous fight scenes, where no characters are truly safe. When asked if he’s worried about his character in upcoming storylines, Quaid said:

“Oh, all the time. If that happened, I think Eric would probably try to warn me in advance, but I don’t know. I am worried a lot. No one really seems to be safe, and the show is really good at surprising you. I don’t necessarily know who’s gonna make it out alive at the end of every season, and I love that.

The Boys
Season 4 begins on Prime Video on June 13.
