David Leitch has revealed his reasons for stepping down from directing Jurassic World 4, explaining how the decision was one that came down to doing what was right for the movie. The Deadpool 2 helmer wanted to emphasize that there was a conversation between himself, Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, and in the end, he was happy to step away from the film, knowing that it could allow someone else with the same vision to take over the next installment of the dinosaur franchise.

Leitch addressed his departure in a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. With the new Jurassic venture set to enter a brand-new era for the franchise, without returning to the characters already established in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, it seems that Leitch’s decision to make way for Gareth Edwards to take the helm of the project was partly influenced by this desire for a narrative. He said:

“We have the privilege of choice and that’s daunting. And it’s true though, and we’ve kind of earned it, in terms of the movies that we’ve made and the successes they’ve had, and hopefully continued success, but to be asked to be in those worlds, you want to take those conversations seriously, and we are creative to find our ways in to a lot of things. So it was a really great conversation to have, to be in talks with Steven and Frank, about that franchise that is so dear to us, it was a really beautiful time. Ultimately, you have to do what’s best for the movie at hand and do what’s best for you as an artist.

And make sure that you’re making the same movie, and you could do it within the parameters, and at some point we just said — we wanted to give that answer quickly because they have to go make this movie quickly that everyone is excited to see, and I think that they’ve landed on, obviously, a brilliant director, who we love and respect and… it’s gonna be amazing. [Turning down Jurassic World 4 was] surreal, but I believe we’ve earned this position [to turn it down]. And we’re privileged we are able to choose the movies we want to make, and we want to make sure we have the creative freedom to make those movies the way we want to make them.”

Jurassic World 4 Can Roar Under Gareth Edwards

While David Leitch clearly would have attempted to take the new Jurassic World movie in a different direction to the one that we will be getting, the appointment of Gareth Edwards was met with a lot of positivity. Edwards has already been responsible for one of the best modern Star Wars movies with Rogue One, and brought Godzilla back to the big screen in 2014’s MonsterVerse kick-off film.

As well as being helmed by Edwards, Jurassic World 4 will be bringing back original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, which suggests the franchise could be heading back to its roots in many ways. While Jurassic World: Dominion relied on a lot of nostalgia, callbacks to the earlier movies in the saga, and some very elaborate set-piece moments, the new movie could bring its story back to basics with a new cast of characters – very similar to what Edwards did with Rogue One.

Rumors have suggested that Jurassic World 4 will be another reset of the popular dinosaur franchise.

The creative team also includes long-time franchise producers Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Patrick Crowley. Having been with the franchise from the start, if anyone should know how to get the best from a Jurassic movie, then it should be these three. While there has been no indication of who will be leading the movie, there have been some close-to-confirmed rumors that Marvel star Scarlett Johansson is close to signing onto the movie as the new lead, taking over from Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Jurassic World 4
has set a release date of July 2, 2025.
