Woolwich fire: 70 firefighters rush to scene as huge blaze breaks out | UK | News

Shocking footage has emerged of a severe blaze tearing through a flat on the tenth floor of a high-rise building, with emergency services scrambling to the scene.

As many as 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines have been sent to scene on Rymill Street in Woolwich, in the capital’s South East.

Fire crews at first feared the worst but thankfully, in their latest statement, the London Fire Brigade revealed three people managed to escape from the flat and no-one else was thought to be inside.

The people were out of the flat by the time firefighters arrived.

Other residents stayed in their flats, which firefighters say they are hopeful could be unaffected.

The London Fire Brigade released a statement saying:”Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Rymill Street in North Woolwich.

“Part of a five-roomed flat on the 10th floor was alight. Three people left the building before the Brigade arrived, whilst others remained in their unaffected flats. They are being treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

“The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took more than 20 calls to the blaze.

“The Brigade was called at 2232 and the fire was under control by 2350. Fire crews from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

On Twitter, one person wrote: “Fire in apartment block in North Woolwich, London. Looks very serious!”
