Workin’ Moms season 8 never happened despite a dedicated following during its seven-season run. Starring Catherine Reitman in the lead role of Kate Foster, Workin’ Moms lives up to its title and focuses on a group of five working Toronto mothers. The unlikely band of friends meet at a parent-baby group and, over the seven seasons, help each other find existential fulfillment through the highs and lows of balancing motherhood and a career.

The show received an International Emmy Nomination, among other awards, and by the season 7 finale, it still had enough audience momentum to continue with Workin’ Moms season 8 and beyond. Workin’ Moms Wasn’t Renewed For Season 8

The Show Got Its Intended Ending

Workin’ Moms was canceled shortly after season 7, and it looks doubtful the decision will change with a Workin’ Moms season 8 renewal. The show’s creator and cast lead, Catherine Reitman, was behind the decision to end Workin’ Moms before season 8. In an interview with Variety, she revealed the thought process behind the decision.

“We’ve all seen a show that loses its juice and keeps puttering and re-scrambling storylines.
I didn’t want that to be the case with ‘Workin’ Moms.’ Our fans have been incredibly loyal to us. I take that seriously.”

For Reitman, Netflix, and the rest of the Workin’ Moms creative team, the choice to end things came down to finishing the show on a high note. Reitman also said she was grateful to get seven seasons out of the show, explaining that she was “so hopeful that I would get to Season 2.” Workin’ Moms is based on Reitman’s personal experience as a working mother.

Catherine Reitman Would Lead A Returning Cast

If Workin’ Moms season 8 ever arrives on Netflix, it’s likely the core cast would remain the same — provided there wasn’t so much time between the season 7 finale and renewal that schedule clashes prevented a return, of course. Show creator Catherine Reitman (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) would return as PR exec, company director, and working mother Kate Foster. It’s also likely that Dani Kind (Wynonna Earp) will be back again as her best friend and fellow working mom, Anne Carlson.

The rest of the ensemble cast of Workin’ Moms is quite extensive, and who would return entirely depends on how long there was between season 7 and a hypothetical season 8. Some further returning cast members could include Jessalyn Wanlkim, Enuka Okuma, or Sarah McVie. Juno Rinaldi, an original from season 1, left the series after season 6. If Workin’ Moms is renewed so far in the future that “reboot” is a more appropriate description than “season 8,” then the cast could be considerably different.

Workin’ Moms Could Focus On New Mothers

There are no plot details for Workin’ Moms season 8, as the show was intended to conclude with season 7. However, that doesn’t mean the narrative of Catherine Reitman’s dramedy couldn’t continue. The real question isn’t if the Workin’ Moms story could carry on to season 8, but if it should. The ending left viewers with some form of closure for each character in an incredibly cathartic manner. Reitman also said she was okay with leaving the series while leaving the door slightly open for the future (via Variety).

“Never say never. Life has been very strange for me over the last few years, and has taught me all sorts of things. So it would be foolish to say never … But I care so much about how it’s told, the idea of in any way cheapening it makes me allergic. But if there’s a way to do it
without
doing that, yeah, I’d be on board.”

If Netflix picks up Workin’ Moms season 8, Reitman could always focus on a different group of working mothers. One observation of Workin’ Moms is that Kate, Anne, Sloane, and the rest all have white-collar professions. Taking the show’s core concept to a different, blue-collar background with a new group could be an interesting direction for Workin’ Moms season 8.

What The Workin’ Moms Cast Has Done Since The Show Ended

Ransom, Parish, Y: The Last Man, & More

The woman behind Workin’ Moms is Catherine Reitman, legendary director Ivan Reitman’s daughter. While she said she had two shows in development when Workin’ Moms ended, neither has gone into production. Her best friend on the show, Dani Kind, was starring in Wynonna Earp at the same time as Workin’ Moms, and has only had one-shot TV roles (In Contempt, Ransom) and a small role in the movie I Used to Be Funny since.

Juno Rinaldi left the series after season 6 and never returned for the finale in season 7. Her biggest roles since leaving the show came in the FX sci-fi series Y: The Last Man, where she played April, and in the movie Fingernails, where she appeared in the small role of a principal. Enuka Okuma replaced Rinaldi in the main cast in season 7. Since leaving the show, she has had a two-episode appearance on the TV show Parish.

Sarah McVie has appeared in two TV shows since Workin’ Moms, with roles in Garvey’s Ghost and The Big Oil Alliance. Jessalyn Wanlim hasn’t appeared in anything since Workin’ Moms, but she has a role in the upcoming TV series Running Point, which also stars Kate Hudson and Brenda Song. While Workin’ Moms was a huge show for all these actresses, none have done much since the show’s finale but their talent means that’s likely to change going forward.
