Westworld Creator Jonathan Nolan Still Hoping to Make Season 5

Westworld Creator Jonathan Nolan Still Hoping to Make Season 5

Summary

  • Jonathan Nolan is still hopeful for a
    Westworld
return, aiming to finish the story properly.
  • If
    Westworld
season 5 had happened, it would have focused on Dolores Abernathy’s journey.
  • While waiting for
    Westworld’s
potential return, Nolan and Lisa Joy are bringing the post-apocalyptic drama
    Fallout
    to viewers soon.

Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan is holding out hope that the acclaimed science fiction series will be brought back someday. After four seasons, Westworld was suddenly canceled back in November 2022, with the principal cast receiving payment for the canceled fifth season and the show has since been removed from the streaming platform Max. But, speaking with The Wrap, Nolan revealed that he is still hoping to “revisit” the dystopian saga.

“Our philosophy from the beginning was you make sure each installment, each chapter should be somewhat complete, tell a good story and then you get a chance to keep going. But Lisa and I did have an architecture for the series and I’m big on getting a chance to finish these things. I think our hope is still somewhere down the line [for] a chance to revisit that story, and I would hate to have spoiled it now if we get a chance to do so.”

Westworld: Why Canceling the Series was a Bad Idea

Westworld was canceled far before it should have ended, and here’s why that was a bad move on HBO’s part.

It certainly sounds like Nolan is striving to tell more stories in the Westworld franchise, and clearly does not want to give anything away should his efforts prove fruitful. While we don’t know what would have happened in Westworld season 5, co-creator Lisa Joy has previously teased some details, revealing that it would have centered on Evan Rachel Wood’s character Dolores Abernathy.

“We always thought that Westworld should kind of come full circle and back to the West, but with Dolores, who was just a player in other people’s games, finally getting to write her own [story]. Just to close up a lot of the stuff that we’ve seen before like the flash-forward with The Man in Black and everything, so we have a plan for Season 5 — but, you know, life can make other plans for you.”

Based on the Westworld movie from 1973 by filmmaker Michael Crichton, the series begins in the titular “Westworld,” a fictional, technologically advanced Wild-West-themed amusement park populated by android “hosts.” Aside from the Western action and sci-fi themes, the series has been praised for its philosophical examination of dehumanization, reality, and consciousness.
