Venom 3 Gets Disappointing Update From Sony Chairman

Venom 3 Gets Disappointing Update From Sony Chairman

Summary

  • Venom: The Last Dance
will be the final installment in the symbiote trilogy, bringing an end to Eddie Brock’s story with Venom.
  • Despite mixed reviews, both
    Venom
movies were big hits at the box office.
  • The final
    Venom
movie, set for release in 2024, will see Tom Hardy return as Eddie Brock and Venom, potentially picking up where
    Spider-Man: No Way Home
    left off.

The third Venom movie really will be the character’s last dance, with Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman confirming that it will bring the Tom Hardy-led comic book movie franchise to an end. Discussing the upcoming Sony slate with Deadline recently, which includes the Spider-Verse movies, 28 Years Later, and The Karate Kid, Rothman stated that Venom: The Last Dance will be the final outing for Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote friend, as well as teasing the scope of the Sony Spider-Man Universe movie.

“The third and last Venom, is going to be huge.”

Sony’s somewhat questionable Spider-Man spinoff Universe first began with Venom back in 2018, which introduces Tom Hardy as the Marvel villain/antihero who starts off as a guerrilla journalist before being unwittingly merged with a symbiotic alien with lethal abilities. Despite mixed reviews, the first Venom outing was a massive success, earning $856 million worldwide at the box office.

Thus, a sequel was released in 2021. Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage reunites audiences with Brock and his extra-terrestrial pal as the journalist attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who becomes the host of an alien symbiote named Carnage. Much like its predecessor, Venom: Let There Be Carnage was met with decidedly mixed reviews from critics, but was again loved by audiences, grossing just over $506 million worldwide and becoming the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year.

Venom: The Last Dance is all set to be helmed by Venom and Venom: Let There be Carnage writer Kelly Marcel, who has also written the screenplay for the third and final installment from a story conceived by Tom Hardy. Alongside Hardy, Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Clark Backo have been cast in undisclosed roles.

While plot details remain unknown at present, the threequel will see Hardy back in the dual role of Eddie Brock and Venom. Various images from filming have seemingly revealed that Venom: The Last Dance will pick up directly after the events of the MCU outing, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Brock sent to the Tom Holland universe before being thrown back into his own again.

As well as teasing the final Venom movie, Rothman also hinted at the future of the Spider-Man franchise, which includes both the animated adventure Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the MCU’s Spider-Man 4.

“Let me tell you when the last of the Spider-Verse movies comes with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, it’s going to be a significant event, as will the next Tom Holland Spider-Man film.”

The Venom franchise makes up part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe, which also includes Morbius and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Directed by J. C. Chandor, Kraven the Hunter stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular Spider-Man villain-slash-antihero, who embarks on a mission to eliminate evil-doers after gaining animal-based abilities.
