CBS recently announced the cancelation of several shows, including NCIS: Hawaii and CSI: Vegas. The network’s executives shared the reasons that led to the discontinuation of the said shows during CBS’s press briefing.

Per The Wrap, CBS has experienced significant ratings victories this season, claiming the title of the most-watched broadcast network in prime time for an unprecedented 16th consecutive season. Network president and CEO George Cheeks pointed out that overall performance metrics and financial considerations played critical roles in determining the fates of these shows.

Budgets are challenged, so we don’t have an unlimited amount of slots on Paramount+.

Amy Reisenbach, CBS Entertainment president, implied that despite solid performances, not all shows could continue due to the competitive nature of network scheduling and the need to introduce new content. She said:

“It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh [and] keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year, everything came back really strong.”

Despite these cancelations, CBS’s dedication to its staple franchises remains unchanged. Reisenbach pointed out the ongoing projects within the CSI franchise and reaffirmed the network’s commitment to the NCIS series, suggesting confidence in their enduring appeal. The NCIS franchise, in particular, continues to be a major part of CBS’s strategy, with plans for the original series and NCIS: Origins to return this fall, and NCIS: Sydney slated for a spring debut.
