As the cast list for Rian Johnson’s third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, grows and grows, Tom Hardy has now responded to the long-running rumors that he will appear in the film. As the project drip fed audiences its phenomenal cast over the last few months, rumors began to circulate that Tom Hardy and Lindsay Lohan would also be appearing in Wake Up Dead Man. The day after production began on the third installment in the franchise, Tom Hardy publicly confirmed he will not be involved.

Hardy sat down with ET Online to promote his leading role in Jeff Nichols’ long-delayed The Bikeriders. During the conversation, Tom Hardy was asked about the rumors, and the actor said he knew nothing about them until the morning of the interview. The actor wasted no time denying his involvement in the new film, simply saying “nobody’s called me about this.” He then expressed his surprise at reading the rumors, before joking with a media-trained answer teasing that he could still appear in the film. He continued:

“This came out in the Google machine this morning, even I was like ‘What’s this?’ Someone’s gotta ask me. Sounds cool, but no one’s asked me. That’s showbiz, right? Maybe I am in it!”

Knives Out 3 Already Has an Amazing Ensemble Cast

While Tom Hardy definitely won’t be joining the ranks of Knives Out alumni, the upcoming movie, Wake Up Dead Man, already features a cast filled to the brim with A-List talent. Past movies have already embroiled Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Edward Norton, and Kathery Hahn (among many, many more) in twisting and conniving murder mysteries, and the latest film is upping the ante with its list of involved talent.

Joining Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc for Wake Up Dead Man is Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Thomas Haden Church, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, and Daryl McCormack. Like the second installment, which also featured cameos from Hugh Grant, Ethan Hawke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Yo-Yo Ma, fans are also expecting Wake Up Dead Man to feature some equally impressive surprise celebrity appearances.

As well as upping the ante with its megastar-filled cast, Wake Up Dead Man is also reportedly unlike any other Knives Out movie so far. Speaking to ComicBook.com in 2023, writer/director Rian Johnson revealed that Wake Up Dead Man will be “very, very different.” The director also revealed his writing process for creating a gripping murder mystery. Johnson said:

“I’ve got a big cloud of ideas, but it hasn’t all snapped into focus yet. It’s exciting, though, and it’s very, very different from this one. That’s what I’m excited about. I start structurally. I start working in notebooks. I don’t start with a crime, I start with the structure of the story, and what the audience’s journey is actually going to be through the story. Which has to do with the crime, but more than that, it has to do with who we care about and why.”

Wake Up Dead Man
is currently scheduled to release on Netflix in 2025.
