This Your Honor Storyline Is Arguably the Worst in the Series

  • The controversial Adam and Fia storyline in
    Your Honor
    divides fans, raising ethical questions.
  • The series is a somewhat underrated crime drama starring Bryan Cranston and explores a desperate father’s journey into crime and deceit.
  • Your Honor
has found a resurgence on Netflix after a mixed reception when it was initially released.

Your Honor, the crime drama created by Peter Moffat, based on the Israeli TV series Kvodo, has recently seen some resurgence after Netflix picked it up for further streaming. Nevertheless, it seems that the show has also divided audiences and fans, who have found one of the storylines in the show to be… unsettling. If you’re a fan of the series, chances are you also frowned at the controversial relationship that seemed to spawn from pure tragedy.

Originally released on Showtime, the show ran for two seasons from 2020 to 2023. It tells the story of a judge, Michael Desiato (Bryan Cranston), who’s forced to break the law to protect his son, Adam, after he accidentally runs over the son of a mob boss who’s set on bringing the culprit to justice. Jimmy Baxter will do the impossible to find out the truth about who killed Rocco and try to keep everything together in the crime underworld he dominates.

The controversial storyline in question, which has people scratching their heads and others observing in disgust, arises when Adam meets Fia, Jimmy’s daughter and Rocco’s sister. As the series expands on their encounters and heads toward the unthinkable, viewers stare in shock as the ethical inconsistencies seem to drift off for the sake of a supposedly cute couple that’s not entirely believable. To call it cringe is an understatement.

The following article contains MAJOR spoilers for Your Honor.

Adam and Fia’s Storyline in Your Honor Doesn’t Make Much Sense

Your Honor

Adam and Fia meet under no special circumstances. What divides them is that Adam does nothing when he finds out who she is and doesn’t exactly stop when their friendship turns into a full-blown relationship. Eventually, Fia will discover who he is and how “close” he is to her family. The first issue is that, while other problems unfold, their connection is anything but compelling or believable. It makes us question the ethics of their relationship early on, and it turns into an underdeveloped conflict in the show.

When Adam tragically dies, and the show takes its drastic, dramatic turn for Season 2, the writers are forced to follow up on Fia and Adam and put a baby in the way. The distressing turns into the absurd when we find out Fia has named the boy Rocco Adam Baxter. Ultimately, the baby will be a strong point of emotional connection for Judge Desiato, who, after being released from jail, meets Fia and becomes a grandfather in the direst of circumstances.

In a season filled with twists, some that work and others that don’t, this storyline never seemed to resonate with audiences. The problem is that the dramatic turning point stems from a weird relationship that doesn’t exist in the original Israeli show, where Adam’s character doesn’t die, and the relationship between the Capulets and the Montagues doesn’t exist.

Your Honor Is an Underrated Crime Drama

Starring Bryan Cranston in one of his finest performances, Your Honor is an underrated crime drama. What starts as a legal drama set in New Orleans becomes a crime journey early on when Judge Desiato is forced to plunge into an underworld of crime and deceit. What’s essential is that Desiato’s character stays within the boundaries of desperation and never actually judges his son for what he did. As cold as he stays, he also can’t stop being an unconditional father who even makes the death of others justifiable if that means Adam will be safe.

This is what makes the finale of the first season a sucker punch of a narrative decision. The significant cliffhanger sees Adam being shot and killed and paying his price. Desiato stares in shock as his acts become a horrific combination of something that won’t have an effect on anything but himself. This is why Season 2 exists.

While only two seasons can seem little for strong character development, Your Honor accomplishes this through exceptional performances by Cranston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lilli Kay, Hunter Doohan, Hope Davis, Tony Curran, Carmen Ejogo, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Benjamin Flores Jr. among many others.

Your Honor Has Found More Success Than Ever on Netflix

One of Netflix’s recent additions, Your Honor, recently found a much-deserved new audience on the streamer. During its initial run on Showtime, the crime drama starring one of TV’s most important performers got the attention of enough viewers to warrant a second season, but it fizzled out quickly because of a more complicated plot that partially stemmed from the controversial storyline of Adam and Fia. Strangely, Season 2 is better rated on Rotten Tomatoes (67% against 50% for Season 1).

However, all this seems to be secondary to the current consideration of Your Honor on Netflix. New viewers dove into the series for a quick binge-watch and put it high on the most streamed shows on the service. Nevertheless, questions remain. And for Adam and Fia’s “quick but fruit-bearing” relationship, you’ll find that many viewers find it uncomfortable, while others simply hate it as a narrative decision. Your Honor is streaming on Netflix.
