The Witcher Star Says ‘Attack-y’ Fans Need to Give Liam Hemsworth a Chance

Summary

  • Fans urged to support Liam Hemsworth taking over Geralt role from Henry Cavill, despite backlash.
  • Freya Allen asks fans to give Hemsworth a chance, acknowledges challenges of stepping into role.
  • Characters in
    The Witcher
series go on separate journeys in the upcoming season.

The Witcher star Freya Allen has called for fans of the series to get behind Liam Hemsworth instead of being “attack-y” as he prepares to take over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill. The news of Cavill’s departure from the franchise and Hemsworth’s appointment to the lead role was met with a wall of outrage from Cavill’s many fans. Even now, the discourse continues to follow Hemsworth as he trains for the tough role.

Speaking to Collider, Allen, who plays Ciri in the Netflix series, shared her thoughts on the situation, and called for fans to give the actor “the time of day” when the series returns for its fourth season. She said:

“I don’t want to speak for him, but from what I’ve understood, I feel like he’s really wanting to try and bring the heart,” she said. “He’s been training. I feel sorry for him, honestly, because, number one, that fan base can be very attack-y, and it’s not an ideal situation to be in taking up someone else’s role. But I’m really excited to see what he does. And he’s such a lovely guy. I just hope that people give him the time of day, you know?”

In another interview with Comicbook.com, the actress did confess that she was initially “dreading” the casting change, but very quickly overcame her doubts. She said of Hemsworth:

“He’s lovely. Really, really sweet. Really, you know, grounded person, and I was dreading it for a while, if I’m honest, but now I’m on it, and we have, thank God, a great director starting us off which has made it so much fun. My storyline is just so much great stuff to play. I’m actually quite happy.”

Hemsworth recently shared an image of himself training in the gym as he gets ready for filming to begin. It took no time for the comments section to fill up with comments such as, “Not my Witcher,” and, “Cavill will always be Geralt.” However, as has been pointed out several times, Hemsworth is just someone taking on a role he was offered, and even with the announcement that The Witcher will come to an end with Season 5, fans have been urged to give Hemsworth a chance to prove himself in the role before passing judgement.

The Witcher Season 4 Will See Characters on Separate Journeys

For Allen, she feels that her screen time with Hemsworth is limited in the new season of The Witcher, as their characters have different journeys to take. She continued:

“Not really, because our characters, all the storylines are going their separate ways this season. So it’s very much my own journey,” she said. “Obviously, Geralt’s always going to have a massive weight on my character, but it’s very much her. She’s got a lot going on this season. She goes to some very dark places within herself, and also just discoveries, and coming into being a woman, basically. So yeah, she’s got her own separate thing. There isn’t much of an interaction there.”

Netflix Reveal the End of The Witcher Is Coming Following Controversial Loss of Henry Cavill

Liam Hemsworth will have a short-lived run as Geralt of Rivea as Netflix have revealed the ending of the show is in sight.

Of course, this is similar to the earlier seasons of the show, when several characters all had their own purpose in the overall story and were mostly split on different paths throughout the seasons. However, with The Witcher now heading towards its conclusion in Season 5, it seems that everyone will have relatively limited time on screen with Hemsworth’s iteration of Geralt, no matter how well received – or not – his debut turns out to be.

The Witcher
is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2025. The first three seasons are now streaming on Netflix.
