  • Season 4 of
    The Boys

Prime Video’s The Boys is a lot of things: a scathing satire about the commercialization of every aspect of modern life? Check. A realistic take on narcissistic superheroes? Check. A never ending source of incredible meme potential? Absolutely. On that last point, two of the show’s stars, Antony Starr (Homelander) and Chace Crawford (The Deep) agree, and the pair found it hilarious after going viral multiple times because of the show.

Ahead of The Boys‘ upcoming fourth Season, the pair sat down with The Movie Podcast, where they discussed some of their characters’ meme moments. When asked about the show’s ‘memeability’, Antony Starr first joked about the amount of online memes that have come from their two characters, saying:

“We’ve gotta monetize memes! I’d have about 20 bucks by now.”

Crawford then discusses The Deep’s endless stream of memes, and his most famous to date, titled ‘The Deep Rejoins the Seven’, which sees his aquatic ‘hero’ return to the infamous superhero group following allegations of sexual abuse. The Deep is at the center of many of the show’s most memorable and memed moments, including his attempt to rescue a dolphin in Season 1, and his promiscuous relationship with an Octopus in Season 3, not to mention his own network TV show (in The Boys‘ universe) titled ‘Deep Thoughts with The Deep.’

The actor discussed the ‘Rejoining the Seven’ meme, and even teased where The Deep’s iconic jaunty walk came from. Crawford said:

“That’s so funny, there were all sorts of different stuff, like Mark Walberg in a movie or something. I mean, people are sending that to me left and right, which is so funny. So that was one of the biggest.”

Crawford then channeled a moment of Deep Thoughts with The Deep, saying that he’s always appreciative of going viral because it helps the show. “Obviously, the virality of social media is great-“, he said, before spiraling off and asking his co-star if ‘virality’ is actually a word…

The Boys Season 4 Sees Homelander Unleashed

The pair broached the subject by discussing the shocking finale of Season 3, which saw Homelander laser beam a Starlight (Erin Moriarty) supporter, which was surprisingly met with cheers of applause from his die-hard, far-right leaning fans. Starr described the moment as “the progression of what happened earlier. Which was when he dd his Birthday rant and everyone loved it.”

Jack Quaid, who stars in both The Boys and My Adventures with Superman weighs in on the hotly contested Superman vs Homelander debate.

The actor then teased how the moment affects Homelander in the upcoming fourth season, saying:

“The moment at the end which has become memed quite a lot is that ‘oh, sh*t. I’m getting away [with it].’ They’re clapping. They like it. Oh wow, I got away with it. So season 4 is about that question: How far can we go? What does it mean? What does the opening of that door mean, as we walk through it? And how far can we take this?”

Season 4 sees the battle between Vought’s team of ‘superhero’s and the titular Boys, lead by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid) rage on. The latest trailer has teased the tide of the war may be turning as the team discovers a new virus which can supposedly kill superheros.
