The Academy Offers Promising Update Regarding an Oscar for Best Stunts

The Academy having a category for ‘Best Stunts’ is something that movie fans have wanted to see happen for some time, and it sounds like such an award being presented is getting closer than ever. Speaking with Empire, the heads of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Scientists revealed that they are now talking to members of the stunt community to discuss the possibility of a new golden statue for the best stunts in cinema.

“We’re talking to members of the stunt community who are Academy members about the possibility of that,” Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, said. “We added a new award that will launch in two years for Casting Directors, so we’re always open to those discussions.”

Academy President Janet Yang continued, explaining how the Academy itself is like a “living, breathing organism,” and is open to making changes. In recent years, the likes of the John Wick franchise, the death-defying escapades of Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise, and this year’s The Fall Guy have pushed the idea of an Oscar for Best Stunts to the forefront, and it sounds like the Academy has been listening.

“The Academy is like a living, breathing organism. We listen to our members, and if there’s really strong support and there’s whole mechanisms for how to advance the cause, and they’re interested…,” Yang said. “That’s what happened with Casting. We’ve created new branches over the decades. So it does evolve, and it evolves with the changing industry.”

Ryan Gosling Has Been Crying out for a Stunt Oscar

The Fall Guy star and Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling has been calling for a stunt-related Oscar throughout the pre-and-post release of the action comedy. Starring Gosling as a stuntman who gets caught up in a real-life action-adventure conspiracy, the actor has called The Fall Guya “love letter” to the stunt community, who he believes have deserved an Academy category for some time.

“Obviously, this [The Fall Guy] is a love letter to the stunt community. They are the hardest-working people in show business. They risk more than anyone. This movie is just a giant campaign to get stunts an Oscar.

They have deserved an Oscar for a very long time. It is designed, just as much as make-up is designed, or costumes, or the cinematography. The action is designed as well.”

The Fall Guy was met with positive reviews from critics, and while it struggled somewhat at the box office, Gosling is hopeful that they will get to make a sequel.
