Squid Game American Remake Still Coming From David Fincher & Netflix

According to some sources, David Fincheris still working on an American version ofSquid Game. There are not yet many details about the production, but given the extension of Fincher’s contract with the streamer, there are no limits to what they could do together in the future. While everyone keeps begging Fincher and Netflix for a continuation of Mindhunter, the remake of the South Korean juggernaut TV show could potentially be a more successful project if it actually gets made.

Fincher, whose previous work with Netflix includes the feature film Mank, the series Mindhunter, and most recently, The Killer, isn’t a stranger to remakes. His experience with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo resulted in an acclaimed film, but Sony Pictures always categorized it as a risky and expensive project not worth the hassle. Fincher’s relationship with Netflix is extremely different, with the director being able to expand his creativity basically without restraints. It’s why the idea of a Squid Game remake not only sounds enticing but also possible.

Besides, if Netflix wants to capitalize on an English-language remake, they had better bring out the big guns, and Fincher is undoubtedly one of those filmmakers with enough prestige.

As reported by The Playlist, Fincher has been working on the Squid Game remake for over two years. The original TV show blew up the airwaves in 2021, and chances are that Netflix wanted to remake as soon as possible. Fincher, who has also been working on a Chinatown prequel series for some time, had to put Squid Game also on the board as a potential project. Robert Towne (writer of films like Chinatown, The Firm, Days of Thunder) was working on the miniseries with Fincher, and he has confirmed all episodes are written and good to go. It was going to be Fincher’s next project after 2023’s The Killer.

Netflix has remained quiet about the Squid Game remake. But this doesn’t mean the project isn’t still alive. Dennis Kelly, the British writer of series like Utopia and The Third Day, is reportedly working on the script and has been for some time. Fincher and Kelly had previously worked together on an outline for an American remake of Utopia for HBO, but such project never materialized. Hopefully, Squid Game will.

Squid Game is Still Netflix’s Most-Watched TV Show

In Squid Game, the original show created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix, 456 players participate in a contest where they have to play against each other in order to win ₩45.6 billion. The problem is that the games aren’t exactly safe; they’re deadly versions of children’s games. Losers not only leave the game, but they do so in a body bag. At the center of the game, a poor underdog named Seong Gi-hun will try his best to beat the game while also revealing the dark conspiracy led by the creators of the macabre contest. Squid Game stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, and Heo Sung-tae, among others.

Released in September 2021, the riveting series quickly garnered international acclaim in every corner of the planet. People were fascinated with the violence, the creativity, and the production value of the horror thriller series that came from South Korea. After a few weeks, it sailed past Bridgerton as the most successful Netflix show, and became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time (1.65 billion viewing hours).

News of the second season was instant. People needed more, and the show had a plot that could be expanded. However, that’s about it about season 2 of Squid Game. As confirmed by Netflix, it’s already finished its production, and will surely be released sometime later in 2024. But no one can deny it has taken too darn long. Until then, we will stick to the possibility of getting a remake from thriller mastermind David Fincher in the upcoming future.
