Scream Star Shares Blunt Opinion on the Franchise Becoming More Supernatural

The Scream franchise is one of the few long-running horror sagas that has not involved its central villain becoming a supernatural entity. However, the most recent movies have dabbled in the otherworldly with Skeet Ulrich’s character Billy Loomis returning to the franchise as a vision seen by his daughter, Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter.

Recently speaking to Comicbook.com, Ulrich was asked about the possibility of the next Scream movie going fully supernatural with Ghostface. Despite being one of the less grounded aspects of the franchise’s recent offerings, the actor really doesn’t think that going down that kind of route for Ghostface would work, and could end up pushing things too far for audiences. He said:

“I don’t think so. I think what has made it such a success — and when I do signing conventions throughout the year, the fan base is rabid, rabid, rabid, I’ve never seen anything like it — and I think what they’re into is that it could be their neighbor. You don’t know. But I think if you take it outside of what is possible and plausible in most people’s minds, you lose a lot of that core audience, so I don’t know if that’s necessarily a direction they could get away with. They can get away with a lot, but I don’t know about that one.”

What Is Happening with Scream 7?

Last year, it seemed that nothing was going to stop the Scream franchise completing its new trilogy of movies. 2022’s revival brought back several key characters from the original Wes Craven movies, including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, who appeared alongside new stars Barrera and Jenna Ortega as sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, respectively.

However, the quickly assembled Scream VI lost Campbell over a pay dispute, which disappointed some fans who couldn’t quite imagine a Scream movie without Sidney Prescott making an appearance. Despite this initial worry, the sixth movie in the saga managed to overcome any discourse by moving the setting from the suburbs of Woodsboro to the bright lights of New York City, and delivering one of the best movies in the entire franchise.

Scream 7 became inevitable, but despite the team wanting to get another movie out as quickly as possible, things fell apart very quickly last year. Barrera was fired over her social media comments on the Israel-Gaza war, Ortega was subsequently said to have stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the film lost director Christopher Landon.
