Ryan Reynolds has revealed how his first collaboration with Hugh Jackman on X-Men Origins: Wolverine may not be a movie that many people remember fondly, but it allowed him to see Jackman’s dedication to his craft and willingness to go above and beyond for a film. Deadpool & Wolverine is set to finally bring together the two Marvel icons in a redemptive move that fans have waited to see since their heavily criticized appearance in the 2009 Fox movie. The press tour has given Reynolds and Jackman a chance to reflect on many things, including that divisive movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine suffered a lot of criticism for its depiction of Deadpool. However, it also inspired Reynolds to want to do things right in his own movie…and the rest on that score is the stuff of Marvel legend and ultimately led to this year’s movie release of Deadpool & Wolverine. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds recalled the humbling experience filming with Jackman on his first day on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine set, reflecting on how Jackman was hugely accommodating about staying back after hours to redo the infamous elevator scene. He said:

“We finished the day. Everyone was taking all their crap off and getting ready to go back to their hotels. I just, in a cursory sense, said, ‘I wish I had another crack at that elevator scene that we shot earlier today. I’m realizing what I could have done, the jetlag is wearing off, and I’m starting to see it.’ This guy [Jackman] just fired up the lights in there, asked everyone to hop in the elevator. Their willingness to come back is what really spoke volumes about Hugh.”

There was not even a moment’s hesitation. Every single one of them — including the crew, lighting, everything — hopped to it.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Still Ended Up Being a ‘Trash-Fire’ of a Movie

When Deadpool & Wolverine was still in its infancy, the online banter that has been ongoing between Reynolds and Jackman returned with a vengeance, including the former taking a shot at X-Men Origins: Wolverine for a second time, laying blame for the movie’s terrible reviews squarely on his best buddy.

Reynold previously took aim at the movie’s portrayal of Deadpool in the ending of Deadpool 2, which saw Wade Wilson flitting back along the timeline to undo the wrongs of the past. As well as saving his girlfriend from death and other in-world relevant moments, the scenes also saw Deadpool dropping in on X-Men Origins: Wolverine to take down that version of Wade and “clean up the timeline.” Not content with that, last year Reynolds addressed the previous collaboration with Variety, saying:

“Everyone’s expecting me to eviscerate Hugh Jackman but I will say he was one of the first movie stars I ever worked with, on an absolute trash fire called ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ — that one was on him.”

According to director Shawn Levy, the highly-anticipated Marvel team-up is going back to basics when it comes to the MCU.

While there are many things still to be revealed about Deadpool & Wolverine, one thing that is becoming clear is that while it may bring fire to the MCU, it will be in a good way this time. The film is already expected to break records galore on its opening weekend, and when it comes to R-rated movie records it is ironically looking to beat Deadpool 2 on many fronts. Grab your lewd popcorn bucket and, as the trailer urges, “Let’s f-cking go.”
