Robert Pattinson & Bong Joon-Ho Explain New Movie Mickey 17

Summary

  • Robert Pattinson and director Bong Joon-Ho presented the mind-bending film, Mickey 17, at CinemaCon.
  • Mickey 17 is a story about a man cloned and killed for labor, a strange hero’s journey according to Bong.
  • Pattinson’s role in Mickey 17 is described as someone with low expectations challenged by life’s forces.

Robert Pattinson has surprised audiences at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, appearing at Caesar’s Palace with Academy-Award winning director Bong Joon-Ho (Host, Mother) to unveil the trailer for their mind-bending head trip of a film, Mickey 17. The pair spoke about the highly anticipated new film (which supposedly won’t hit theaters until Jan. 31, 2025), which is the first since 2019’s Parasite, which won Bong Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

“I’m happy we can show the trailer on a big screen — and not on mobile phones,” said Bong to rapturous applause. The filmmaker (via Deadline) explained the film as, “a story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey.”

The film, based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7, follows a man employed as an “expendable,” someone who is cloned and killed and cloned again many times as human labor on a cosmic colonization project. When one clone ends up surviving as another is sent to take his place, the Mickeys are forced to face off or team up. Pattinson boasted to the audience:

I’ve been the biggest fan of Bong for many, many years; he’s my hero. I got sent the script; I was told, ‘You’re gonna love the script, but the part is impossible.’ That was very, very exciting to me. I thought it was the most unusual, bizarre, funny script.

The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun alongside Pattinson as the titular character. “Mickey 17 is someone who has the lowest expectations of his life, and yet the world keeps pushing those expectations, to the point where he has a job that tortures him every day,” continued Pattinson at CinemaCon. “And then 18 comes along, and he’s got frontal lobe damage and no self-control, libido out of control. It’s like playing an evil brother or twin.” Pattinson previously told ES Magazine:

“It’s with Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and it’s like nothing I’ve ever done before. The movie is so crazy, it’s a completely different style of working. It’s so much talking.”

When Will Robert Pattinson Return as Batman?

With titles such as The Lighthouse (2019) and Good Time (2016) to validate his acting skills, Pattinson has been very selective with his career, choosing to work with the greatest directors possible. David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, the Safdies, Christopher Nolan, James Gray, David Michôd, Robert Eggers, and many more directors have worked with the 37-year-old actor, who soared to new heights after taking on the iconic Batman role.

Although no official date has been announced for The Batman’s sequel, Matt Reeves has revealed that he’s working on the script to bring Robert Pattinson’s version of the Cape Crusader back to the screen in the near future. The movie is moving along despite the Warner-Discovery crisis, which is bringing a new DCU canon in which, once again, Reeves’ interpretation of The Dark Knight won’t be included.

This project, like Joker: Folie à Deux, will stay as independent stories as they were conceived. The Batman is building its own universe that already has an official spin-off on the way, The Penguin, an HBO original series that will have Colin Farrell reprising his role as Gotham City’s villain, connecting directly with the sequel.

As the script is being written, there’s not much information available on The Batman 2, which could include Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who appeared in the last minutes of the first movie interacting with Paul Dano’s Riddler. But the film could easily avoid using the character and introduce a new bad guy from the extensive gallery of villains that Batman has to offer.
