It’s time to dust off those spell books and fire up the blender for some margaritas, because Practical Magic 2 is officially in the works with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in talks to return. Based on the 1995 novel by Alice Huffman, Practical Magic premiered in theaters on October 16, 1998, and starred Bullock and Kidman as a pair of sisters born into a magical family of witches who unwittingly summon an evil force that threatens to destroy their lineage. Also starring Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest, Practical Magic wasn’t necessarily well received by critics upon its debut, but over the years, fans have come to love the romantic drama, which currently has a 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
As per Variety, Bullock and Kidman are in talks to return for the sequel, which will be penned by Akiva Goldsman, with the two stars expected to produce alongside Denise Di Novi. Warner Bros. teased the announcement of Practical Magic 2 via their TikTok on Sunday, June 9, 2024, with a cryptic video that said something would be happening at midnight. However, when the clock struck 12, fans were instead treated to a series of clips from the original film with the announcement that it was available to stream on Max. Many die-hard fans were let down by the news, but to everyone’s shock, word of a sequel officially came down on Monday morning instead.

The news of a sequel film to Practical Magic comes as somewhat of a surprise, as a prequel series for HBO Max was announced back in 2019 when it was revealed that an hour-long pilot titled The Rules of Magic, also based on the novel by Huffman, had been ordered at the streamer.
