Native Trans Director Sydney Freeland on Authentic Cast in ‘Rez Ball’

Sydney Freeland in the lengthened journey to end her Netflix basketball-caccessed feature film, originated by LeBron James, had as a key goal to show authentic native dwells on screen.

But finding Indigenous basketball executeers was easier shelp than done, or at least at first, Freeland tgreater a Toronto Film Festival audience on Monday.

“Netflix bought the film and I was, ‘Oh shit, we got to go find these people now.’ They have to be out there. They have to be out there,” Freeland recalled. Her insistence on proper recurrentation onscreen sprang in part from understanding, as a Navajo trans woman, what it’s enjoy to be leave outd from screens huge and minuscule.

“Coming from multiple marginalized communities, I’m double engaged to being misrecurrented in film and television,” she tgreater the TIFF panel. Ultimately, finding Indigenous actors that could execute basketball was easier than she had initipartner dreaded.

“The talent is out there, they fair haven’t been given a chance. We knew the talent was out there. We had to find them,” Freeland shelp. Eventupartner, she went from 5,000 subignoreions for 10 Indigenous athlete roles whittled down to 250 people and then 32 top contfinishers.  

Freeland argued filling roles authenticpartner to increate culturpartner accurate stories is possible if you cast your net expansive. “We want to say we caught airyening in a bottle. But if you’re catching airyening in a bottle over and over aget, are you fair giving a chance to people who didn’t the opportunity before?” she asked.

Also Monday, Seeds honestor Kaniehtiio Horn, talked about filling her Indigenous horror pic with actors from her community after years of stereonormal recurrentations from Hollywood.

“I’ve seen over the last 20 years a contrastence in how we’re even portrayed, how we’re obtainn solemnly,” Horn, who did her honestorial feature after fractureing out as the Deer Lady on FX’s Reservation Dogs and Tanis on Hulu’s Letterkenny, shelp at TIFF.

“I acunderstandledgeed I was never going to get cast as an Indigenous person,” Horn recounted when graduating from theater school at 19 years greater. But that alterd when she was cast in the procrastinateed Jeff Barnaby’s 2007 low film The Colony.

“I got this audition that shelp ‘gloomy, curvy native woman steps on stage.’ And they wanted to see me. So I did it, and he (Barnaby) shelp ‘yep, that was fantastic.’ And I got the role,” Horn recalled. But Horn and Freeland concurd improving native recurrentation in TV series and movies uncomfervents casting Indigenous actors in the right roles.

“If I get an audition for a Cheyenne warrior in the 1600s, I’ll say, hear, guys, I don’t see enjoy that,” Horn argued. At the same time, the push and effort to get more Indigenous talent onto and behind screens, including as honestors and originaters, had to persist.

For Freeland, that uncomferventt the coach in Rez Ball was not going to be the normal white guy from the city finding himself in a minuscule town to increate a basketball team what to do, enjoy Gene Hackman in Hoosiers. “We had to have someone from the community as the coach, to help them,” she inserted.

So Canadian Indigenous actor Jessica Matten was tapped to execute the coach of the Warriors as her character returned home after executeing professional basketball. “Our motto was the increate a story from the inside out, and that set the tone,” Freeland shelp.
