Most Anticipated Sequels Coming To Netflix In 2024

Most Anticipated Sequels Coming To Netflix In 2024

With over 1,500 original titles since it began producing original content in 2013, Netflix has been producing movies and TV series for over a decade. As with any streaming service making its own content, the results are varied and not all originals are made equal. Still, as Netflix continues to make original content, it is no surprise that those movies and series that do exceptionally well will result in sequels. This has already been exemplified with such hits as Bird Box getting a spiritual sequel in Bird Box Barcelona and the sci-fi epic Code 8 seeing its second part release early this year.

To help keep track and raise some excitement for those upcoming releases, here are the most anticipated sequels fans can look forward to in 2024 on Netflix.

6 Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver

Release Date: April 19, 2024

Rebel Moon – Part One Child of Fire allowed director Zack Snyder to develop his sci-fi world, which introduces a tyrannical galactic force known as Motherworld that uses their military force, The Imperium, to rule over multiple planets. When they threaten a farming colony on the moon of Veldt, a chain of events brings together a group of rebels, all with reasons to hate and fear The Imperium, to come together under a common cause. Led by Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, the group ended the first film with a minor victory, but the movie also teased the true nature of the threat they faced.

Rebel Moon—Part Two: The Scargiver looks to continue from the first. The initial release of “Part One” came with the guaranteed release of Part Two, both released within six months of each other. While the consensus on the first movie was largely negative, the visual spectacle still offers plenty for fans to get excited about concluding the story. Hopefully, the expansion of the characters as they prepare once again to face off against The Imperium will help give the franchise the depth that many thought was lacking in the original.

5 Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura

Release Date: June 6, 2024

Fans of martial arts anime with a brutal edge and characters with ‘muscles upon muscles’ have had a lot to thank Netflix for bringing two of the most beloved Manga series in the genre to the platform. Baki Hanma debuted on Netflix in September 2021 and currently has two seasons on the platform. Kengan Ashura debuted on Netflix in July 2019, with two seasons released and a third planned.

Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura is not so much a sequel as it is an event based on both of the series. However, given the guaranteed epic clash and this being a follow-up to Netflix bringing both series to the platform, it still resonates with that feeling of building on something already great. Who knows what will happen when these two face off, but it is guaranteed to be a wonderfully violent and chaotic clash that has many anime fans excited.

4 Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Release Date: July 3, 2024

The first Beverly Hills Cop (1984) was a massive success, grossing over $250 million worldwide and cementing Eddie Murphy as a megastar. This resulted in two sequels, Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994). The fourth Beverly Hills Cop had been planned for some time. It was initially announced for release shortly after the 3rd, but the production fizzled out. It was then re-announced in 2006, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer showing interest in resurrecting the film series.

Finally, after years of speculation, fans have a set release date with Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The fourth film will see Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his friend Billy Rosewood, played by Judge Reinhold. His investigation sees him teaming up with a young detective named Serge, (Bronson Pinchot). The movie will also introduce new characters to the franchise, including Kevin Bacon as Captain Grank of the Beverly Hills Police Department. It is a long time away from the spotlight, but the chance to see Eddie Murphy step into the shoes of Axel Foley once again is certainly a reason to get excited.

3 Ferry 2

Release Date: TBA 2024

The original Ferry acted as a prequel to the Netflix crime series Undercover, with the movie offering up a backstory for gangster Ferry Bouman, played by Frank Lammers. Ferry would also get a TV series on the platform, simply titled Ferry: The Series, proving the characters’ longevity on Netflix. While successful enough to carry on the character’s legacy on the platform, the Dutch crime thriller has remained niche.

Those interested in Ferry Bouman’s character will be best served to work their way up from Undercover to get a better feel for the larger picture surrounding the figure (loosely based on the real-life Dutch gangster Janus van Wessenbeeck). Still, the upcoming Ferry 2 is certain to entice fans of the crime/drama series, even with little details on the plot currently available.

2 The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep

Release Date: TBA 2024

Love it or hate it, there is no denying that The Witcher franchise has faced some difficulties on the Netflix platform, from Henry Cavil’s departure from the role to the lukewarm reception of The Witcher: Blood Origin. However, the tale of Geralt did get a much-needed boost with 2021’s The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which offered a more anime-stylized tale that fans largely enjoyed. A sequel, helmed by Kang Hei Chul, who worked on The Nightmare of the Wolf, seemed inevitable, and now fans have both a trailer and a rough time frame for release.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep follows Geralt as he is hired to investigate attacks on the locals in a seaside village. This gets Geralt and his allies entangled in an age-old feud between humans and sea people that he must race to solve before the conflict escalates. Doug Cockle will return to voice Geralt, having provided his voice in the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey will reprise their roles as Yennefer and Jaskier.

1 Untitled “The Platform” Sequel

Release Date: TBA 2024

2019’s The Platform proved to be a surprise hit for Netflix, with the simple concept movie with a lot of subtext having garnered praise from both fans and critics alike. Seeing a man struggling with an odd imprisonment in which food was slowly lowered down with each subsequent floor getting less access to essential, life-sustaining meals creates a frightening allegory for class and social inequality. It left a strong impression, and a sequel was not necessarily inevitable, but is certainly welcome.

At this point, little is known about the second film, though director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is returning to the project and taking on writing responsibilities. Will the film explore the power structure that led to the creation of ‘the platform?’ The current IMDb synopsis hints at another means to explore grander themes, but viewers will have to wait for more details to emerge.
