Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie
” explores Fox’s life and career, earning critical acclaim and awards.
  • While dedicated to Parkinson’s research, Fox expressed interest in acting again if he can incorporate his challenges into roles.

Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox has said he would be open to a return to acting, despite the star retiring back in 2020 due to complications stemming from Parkinson’s disease. Now, speaking with ET, Fox revealed that, should the right role be put in front of him, he would certainly consider a return to screens.

“If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great. I mean, the documentary was a big thrill.”

The documentary he mentions is Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which was released on Apple TV+ last year and explores the life and career of Fox as well as his struggle with Parkinson’s disease. The project received seven nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards and won the award for Best Documentary Film from the National Board of Review.

Michael J. Fox Tells Whoopi Goldberg He Regrets Not Working With Her After Turning Down Ghost Role

Michael J. Fox shared his regret at not taking the chance to act with Whoopi Goldberg while appearing on The View.

Fox revealed his diagnosis of Parkinson’s way back in 1991, and while he has continued acting throughout, he decided to step away from the industry in 2020 after struggling to remember his lines. The actor has since likened his experience to a scene in director Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which sees Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Rick Dalton, retreating to his trailer when he too cannot remember his lines.

“I thought of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There’s a scene where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character can’t remember his lines anymore. He goes back to his dressing room and he’s screaming at himself in the mirror. Just freaking insane. I had this moment where I was looking in the mirror and thought, ‘I cannot remember it anymore.'”

Michael J. Fox Says He Would Return to Acting if He Can ‘Figure It Out’

Continuing, Fox also recalled forgetting his lines when filming the political thriller series Designated Survivor, with the actor revealing his surprisingly calm reaction…

“But what [was] really refreshing was I didn’t panic. I didn’t freak out. I just went, ‘Well, that’s that. Moving on. A key element of this process is memorizing lines, and I can’t do it.’”

While Fox, who is best known for the sitcoms Family Ties and Spin City, the movies Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, Secret of My Success, Casualties of War, Doc Hollywood, Stuart Little, and The Frighteners, and recent roles in the likes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Good Wife, and The Good Fight, has now retired, he stated that he would return to acting if he could “figure it out.”

“I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out.”

Michael J. Fox now dedicates his time to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which the actor created to help advance research towards curing Parkinson’s disease. The documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, was directed by Davis Guggenheim and is available to stream on Apple TV+.
