Mercedes ‘hire private investigators’ as Lewis Hamilton email continues to cause shockwave | F1 | Sport

Mercedes have reportedly hired private investigators to get to the bottom of anonymous emails and text messages which suggest Lewis Hamilton is being sabotaged by his own team. Hamilton is set to leave the Silver Arrows at the end of the year and join arch-rivals Ferrari.

Hamilton has endured a tough few seasons on the track, with Mercedes falling well short of Red Bull. And the Brackley team are also struggling to keep pace with McLaren and Ferrari.

At the Spanish Grand Prix at the weekend, media pass holders were sent an email entitled “A potential death warrant for Lewis.”

And the email read: “With the exception of Bono (Hamilton’s race engineer) and those of us who love Lewis, others are on a dangerous course that could ultimately be life-threatening to Lewis, other drivers, even the public.

“A cold tyre strategy is a death warrant. Toto [Wolff], George [Russell] beware and be correct. Not all of us are prepared to be a part of your unfair unprofessional destruction of Lewis for your own self gratification.”

According to the Daily Mail, private investigators have been engaged to detect the source of the emails and SMS messages, with a Mercedes spokesman telling the publication: “It is being dealt with externally.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Northamptonshire Police has insisted that no illegal activity has taken place. “Northamptonshire Police received a report on June 12 regarding an email that had been circulated within the Mercedes AMG F1 team,” he explained earlier today (Tuesday).

“No criminal offences were found to have been committed. However, advice was given regarding any further emails the team may receive.”
