  • An Officer and a Gentleman was a critical and commercial success in 1982, highlighting romance and tragedy.

Paramount Pictures has greenlit a remake of the 1982 classic An Officer and a Gentleman. It has also been confirmed who’s set to star: Miles Teller won’t be hanging his military suit any time soon, as the young star has been cast in this update of the unforgettable romance classic.

The Top Gun: Maverick star will most likely play the lead role, which a young Richard Gere previously played in the early ’80s during his prime years. Teller is still riding the wave of success from the Tom Cruise-led action drama that put blockbusters back in style in 2022, in which he starred alongside Glen Powell. He’s also set to appear in the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, that will be released in 2025.

Teller gave life to Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in Paramount’s military drama epic, which made $1.49 billion at the box office in 2022. Rooster is Goose’s son who confronts Maverick when the veteran pilot is recruited to train a gang of young pilots for a world-saving mission. It seems that Rooster has inherited his father’s skills, and Maverick is forced to look back at the traumatic past where Goose tragically died. Rooster is now a full-blown and cocky pilot who wants to follow his father’s steps, but Maverick is skeptical about putting the younger pilot in danger.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Dana Fox took over writing duties from Matt Johnson, and now she’s working on Paramount’s remake of the 1980s classic. Fox is mostly known for writing films like Couples Retreat,Cruella, and The Lost City, among others. Her expertise in writing comedies is what landed her the gig. Still, in writing An Officer and a Gentleman, she will have to increase the dramatic element if the plan is to be faithful to the original 1982 film.

What is 1982’s An Officer and a Gentleman About?

Starring the trifecta of stars Debra Winger, Richard Gere, and Louis Gossett Jr., who we sadly lost this year, An Officer and a Gentleman told the story of Zack Mayo, a young man who wants to become a Navy jet pilot. As he arrives at the military school, he meets his drill instructor, Emil Foley, and the two don’t exactly hit it off. At the same time, Mayo falls in love with a local factory worker named Paula who has some issues of her own, and they’re related to men in uniform. As the boot camp training becomes too jarring for the young soldier, he will face the hardship of trying to convince himself that he can be a better man for Paula.

Taylor Hackford’s An Officer and a Gentleman was a very successful film, making almost $200 million on a very small budget ($7.5 million). It was a notable drama in a year that was big for genres like science fiction and fantasy, and it ended up behind E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Tootsie in the ranking of 1982’s box office hits.

It was also acclaimed by critics, who highlighted the balance between romance and tragedy and its depiction of a compelling romantic story in a setting of blue-collar dynamics and military culture. At the Oscars, it was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two. Louis Gossett Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor award, becoming the first African-American to win in that category. The hit song Up Where We Belong (famously sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes) was composed for the movie and won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
