X-Men ’97 just wrapped its first season and the reception for the series has practically been stellar across the board. Many critics and fans have called it some of the best depictions of the X-Men characters outside the pages of the comic books, and they can’t wait to see what comes next. A second season was already a part of the deal when the series was set up at Disney+, but with several titles under the Marvel Animation banner, Marvel execs are giving hints as to what other animated shows could be coming next in the wake of X-Men ’97’s success.
During a chat with ComicBook.Com, Executive Producer and Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation Brad Winderbaum stated that What If…? Season 3 could be the next Marvel Animation show on deck, although he didn’t confirm an official date.

Premiering in 2021, What If…? is an anthology animated series created by A.C. Bradley and based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. The show explores alternate timelines in the multiverse that showcase what would happen if major moments from the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe occurred differently. Jeffrey Wright narrates the series as the Watcher, and it features many actors from the MCU reprising their roles.
Reviews for What…IF? have been solid since its release, registering a 94 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season and a still solid 88 percent for its second. The series has also been nominated for several awards, including the Annie Awards, Critics’ Choice Television Awards, Golden Reel Awards, Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, and Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
How What If’s the Watcher Could Impact The Fantastic Four in Their MCU Debut
The Watcher is the one character who could impact the Fantastic Four story in more ways than anyone expects.
Following the conclusion of Season 2, a few early looks at Season 3 were revealed in late 2023 which confirmed that Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Bill Foster/Goliath (Laurence Fishburne), Bucky Barnes/Winder Soldier (Sebastian Stan), and Alexi Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) will all be featured in some capacity during the third season.
Also joining the voice cast for the third season is America Ferrera as Agent Morales. The character has briefly appeared in the comic books but What If…?’s approach to her will practically be an original character. There is some indication that the character could be Alisande Morales, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that first appeared in 2004’s Captain America and the Falcon #1, created by Christopher Priest and Bart Sears. As of now this is all speculation, but all will be answered when Season 3 of What…If? hits Disney+.
