Lord of the Rings Star Viggo Mortensen Reveals What It Will Take for Him to Return in Prequel

Summary

  • Viggo Mortensen may return as Aragorn in
    The Hunt for Gollum
if the script is good or he needs money.
  • Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis will produce and direct the film, respectively.
  • The film will explore Gollum’s character and may feature familiar characters from the original trilogy.

The Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen has revealed what it will take to persuade him to reprise the role of Aragorn in the upcoming prequel, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. And we can only hope that one of them doesn’t happen. In a new interview with THR, Mortensen, who played the role of Ranger of the North and future King throughout the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, says his possible comeback all depends on the script…or his bank balance.

“I haven’t read a script. So I don’t know. The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends.”

Of course, considering his success on the big screen since his breakthrough role as Aragorn, it’s unlike that Mortensen will ever worry about a job. So, let’s just hope that the script for The Hunt for Gollum is good enough to tempt him back, which is something that many fans would no doubt love to see happen.

This is not the first time that Mortensen has addressed a potential return to Middle-earth, revealing that GQ that he will “only do it” if it’s right for the character.

“Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

The Hunt for Gollum Could Feature Several Familiar Characters

A new movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise was announced back in May, with the title, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, being officially revealed moments later. The filmmaker behind the acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy and the lesser-rated The Hobbit trilogy, Peter Jackson, will produce the project, with actor Andy Serkis all set to reprise the role of Gollum and go behind the camera as director.

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran and Philippa,” Serkis said in a statement at the time. “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious…”
