Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes CGI-Less Cut Gets Exciting Update

The intriguing, CGI-less version of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apeshas now been given a release date, with People revealing that it will feature on the home release, specifically the 4K UHD edition, which is now due for release on August 27. 20th Century Studios will release Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on digital from July 9, with the movie landing on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD in August. The alternate version of the movie, which will show the ape actors in their motion capture suits, is titled Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut, and is presented through split-screen (which is perhaps a little disappointing), showing the final film on one side, with the unfinished visual effects version on the other.

This alternate cut also comes with an optional audio commentary by director Wes Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman and VFX supervisor Erik Winquist, and should provide some exciting insight into the actors’ performances before the CGI wizardry is applied. Other bonus features that will be available on the home release include deleted and extended scenes, and a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Director Wes Ball has previously teased the CGI-lacking version of his Planet of the Apes movie, which promises to provide show off the raw filmmaking process.

“I’m doing a little thing for the DVD where you can watch the movie – the entire movie – with the raw dailies. I’m working on that, where you’ll be able to watch and see both the final [cut] and the raw dailies. You can see how close they get, what they do, and how they stitch everything together. It’s amazing, and you can just sit there and enjoy it.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes debuted in theaters last month and has since been met with positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike. While things started slow, the Planet of the Apes prequel saw huge success at the box office, and has now grossed over $377 million worldwide. All of which bodes well for the planned trilogy.
