Despite it being almost 30 years since the Speed franchise came to an abrupt end with Speed 2: Cruise Control, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock believe that they could successfully revive the action franchise for a third movie as they vowed to do something together “before our eyes close.” While the statement itself comes with its own quite stark state on mortality, the pair’s desire to work with each other again before they die has sparked hope of that reunion being in a third Speed movie.
Speed originally hit cinemas in 1994, and in celebrating its 30th anniversary, it is not surprising that Reeves and Bullock have been revisiting the movie that gave both of their careers a solid boost thanks to its tense, thrilling ride courtesy of Michael Bay. The film’s plot saw Reeves playing an LAPD officer who, along with Bullock’s bus passenger, had to keep a bus driving above 50mph to prevent it being blown up by a bomb planted by Denis Hopper’s unhinged villain. The movie was a success and spawned its 1997 sequel, but only Bullock returned for the rinse-and-repeat story, which was this time set on a cruise ship rather than a bus.

Now in an appearance on the 50mph podcast, which looks back at the making of the original movie, Reeves and Bullock have created a very small spark that suggests they could return to the franchise again. Speed 3 Could Be the Next Big Nostalgic Legacy Sequel
Currently, movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s are in vogue once again, and getting some hefty praise on the back of some impressive legacy sequels. While this kind of thing is no guarantee of success, if both Reeves and Bullock were to sign onto a Speed threequel, then it would have a decent chance of finding an audience.
Although Reeves did not make an appearance in Speed 2, citing that he did not feel the script was good enough, he has previously opened the door on returning for a Speed movie if it had “a great story.” Whether anyone can put together such a script – especially when the principle of the movie is a relatively simple one that is hard to recapture without simply repeating itself – is another question. However, it does seem that whether it is part of a new Speed movie or something else, we will certainly see Reeves and Bullock appear on-screen together in some way…even if it is when they are both old and gray.

While there me be a bit of a wait for that, Reeves is currently lining up a string of roles, including a voice role as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a return as John Wick in spin-off movie Ballerina, a reunion with Cameron Diaz in the crime comedy Outcome, and taking on the role of an out-of-favor angel in Good Fortune.
