John Carpenter Shares a Blunt Takedown of ‘Alright’ Oppenheimer

John Carpenter Shares a Blunt Takedown of 'Alright' Oppenheimer

Summary

  • The master of horror himself, John Carpenter, offers a candid take on
    Oppenheimer
    – declares it just “OK.”
  • Oppenheimer
‘s unexpected success was bolstered by the unique “Barbenheimer” concept and star-studded ensemble cast.
  • Even though Carpenter found
    Oppenheimer
just “alright,” he seems more interested in discussing
    Barbie
    and Margot Robbie’s work.

John Carpenter has shared his candid take on the recent success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, putting himself in the minority by declaring the biopic just “OK.” As one of the biggest names in supernatural and unworldly horrors, Carpenter doesn’t seem to have been mightily impressed with the Oscar-winning story of a real-life horror story – the creation of one of the most destructive devices in history, the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer became a cinematic sensation in 2023. Inexplicably helped along by Barbie thanks to a shared release date that created the unique “Barbenheimer” concept, Nolan’s epic account of Robert J. Oppenheimer and his involvement in the Manhattan Project broke several records on its way to being the director’s crowning achievement at the Oscars earlier this year. Starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role, and enlisting an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and many more, the star quality both in front and behind the camera certainly paid off.

However, in a recent interview, Halloween creator Carpenter revealed that he is one of the few who was not blown away by Oppenheimer. Speaking with Last Donut of the Night, Carpenter was asked about the movie, but skirted around the topic while revealing which movie he did find much better. He said:

“I don’t want to talk about things that I haven’t enjoyed. I liked Maestro a great deal. I thought that was terrific. Oppenheimer was OK. It was alright. Everyone’s praising it as the movie of the century—I don’t know about that.”

John Carpenter Had More to Say About Barbie Than Oppenheimer

Although Carpenter said he doesn’t like talking about things that he has not enjoyed, he clearly found something to like in Oppenheimer’s strange bedfellow, Barbie. In an interview with the LA Times in 2023, the director broke down Barbie and how, despite it being “not my generation,” he was more than happy to chat about it in a comical way, and heaped praise on the film’s star, Margot Robbie. He said:

“I don’t go out. I haven’t been to a movie in a while, but I see them at my house. I’ll see it there. I watched Barbie. I can’t believe I watched Barbie. It’s just not my generation. I had nothing to do with Barbie dolls. I didn’t know who Allan was. I mean, I can sum it up. She says, ‘I don’t have a vagina,’ and then at the end, ‘I’m going to go to a gynecologist!’ That’s the movie to me. I mean, there’s a patriarchy business in there, but I missed that whole thing. Right over my head. But I think she’s fabulous, Margot Robbie.”

However, it is not just the work of other directors that Carpenter has a frank opinion of. In another interview, he completely rejected the idea that he is a “master of horror,” claiming that he doesn’t believe he is the “master of anything.”

“Look, I’m not a master of anything. I just want to play video games and watch basketball. That’s all I care about doing. I don’t want to bother anybody. It’s not apt because I’m nowhere near Hitchcock. I’m much more like The Blob. I’m The Fly. I’m the Attack of the Crab Monsters. I’m a whole different breed.”
