Jennifer Aniston became emotional while reflecting on Friends. During a chat for Variety with Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson, Aniston fondly recalled the Friends premiere – sharing an anecdote that included her late co-star Matthew Perry. Friends, which premiered in 1994 and remains one of television history’s most beloved sitcoms, turns 30 this year. When Brunson was prompted by someone off-camera to ask Aniston how it felt watching Friends now, the actress and producer’s voice cracked with emotion as she told Brunson: “Oh God, don’t make me cry.”

After collecting herself and wiping tears from her eyes, she shared:

“I just started thinking about… Yeah, no. I’m okay. It’s a happy tear. It’s so strange to even think that it’s 30 years old. Because I remember the day that it was going to premiere on television, on NBC. Matthew Perry and I were having lunch somewhere, and we knew Lisa was getting her hair colored. So we ran into the hair salon, and I snuck up — she was in the sink — and I took the nozzle from the guy that was supposed to be doing it and just started washing her hair. It definitely flew out of control, and that was unfortunate.”

Aniston went on to share what the series meant to the cast, calling it one of the greatest gifts:

“But the excitement we had, it feels like yesterday. The fact that it’s had this long, wonderful life and it still means a lot to people is one of the greatest gifts I think all five of us — all six of us — we never could imagine. And we see each other. I talked on FaceTime with Court last night for an hour, and Lisa and the boys, and we just have a really — it’s a family forever.”

Through its ten-season run, the sitcom created a treasure trove of catchphrases and situations that became ingrained in popular culture. The series earned 62 Emmy nominations, securing six wins; most notably, Friends received the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy during its eighth season. That same year, Aniston earned the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award.

Following her Friends success, Aniston appeared in films, including The Break-Up, Marley & Me, Horrible Bosses, and Dumplin’. In 2019, she returned to television in a major way with the Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show (which she also executive produces). Her performance earned Aniston a Screen Actors Guild Award. She is set to return for the show’s fourth season.

News of Jennifer Aniston’s 9 to 5 reimagining has drawn different reactions from the stars of the original movie.

If the end of her interview with Brunson carries any weight, it’s possible we may see Aniston pay a visit to Abbott Elementary. To conclude the conversation, Brunson told Aniston:

“Thank you, Jennifer Aniston. This has been the dream of my life, as you can tell. I just admire you. I’m so excited for what you do next, and I think you’re a really, really lovely person.”

Aniston responded:

Oh, bless, so are you, honey. And while we’re here, I’m going to put my hat in the ring like all the other actors do, because if Bradley Cooper can do it … If you find a moment on ‘Abbott’ that you can see for
this
one, I’d love to come play with you.”
