Jeff Bridges Returning for Tron 3, Slams De-Aging CGI in Tron: Legacy

Jeff Bridges Returning for Tron 3, Slams De-Aging CGI in Tron: Legacy

Summary

  • Jeff Bridges officially announces his involvement in
    Tron: Ares.
  • Bridges also complains about how the de-aging process made him look in 2010’s
    Tron: Legacy.
  • Tron: Ares
will unite OG star Bridges with Academy Award winner Jared Leto in the sci-fi series’ third installment.

“Greetings, programs!” The news isn’t good for those at ENCOM, but diehard fans of The Grid are undoubtedly stoked, because Tron star Jeff Bridges has officially announced that he is joining Tron: Ares. The third installment in Disney’s science fiction film series will feature Bridges’ return to the franchise — and he will “play a part” in the upcoming sequel.

However, Bridges didn’t clarify if he’s portraying Kevin Flynn, Clu, or both again — perhaps a new player altogether. Let the speculation begin. Bridges portrayed both characters (Flynn, Clu) in Tron (1982) and its sequel Tron: Legacy (2010). Bridges made the announcement during his appearance on the Film Comment podcast. The actor said:

I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story. I’m excited about that. Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.

Bridges also used the podcast’s platform to reveal that he didn’t like the way he looked after undergoing the de-aging process in Tron: Legacy (2010). The film opens with flashbacks of a younger, de-aged Kevin Flynn (Bridges) right before he disappears from the face of the Earth. Bridges, as he did briefly in the first film, pulls double duty in Legacy. The actor also reprises the role of Clu, and Bridges appears on-screen as the de-aged bad guy for the majority of the film. Bridges said in the same podcast:

I didn’t like the way I looked. I felt like I looked more like Bill Maher than myself. It was kind of bizarre.

Will Tron Fight for the Users Again?

Tron: Legacy undoubtedly hurt some fans’ feelings as the noble character of Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) was reduced to a shell of his heroic self in the 2010 sequel. Rather than fighting for the users as the program did in 1982, Tron was reprogrammed as Clu’s servant, Rinzler. Rinzler ultimately comes to his senses and sacrifices himself to help Kevin Flynn (Bridges), Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) and Quorra (Olivia Wilde) escape near the conclusion, but it is anyone’s guess how the original Tron and Boxleitner (if he reprises the role) fill figure into the unknown of Tron: Ares.

The official plot synopsis for Tron 3 reads as follows:

Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

Needless to say, there are still a lot of questions swirling about what will happen in the third installment of the Tron saga. Bridges’ return to The Grid is a major step forward, which will provide a much-needed connection between the first two films and the Leto-led Ares. And an Ares co-star has also found a way to whet fans’ appetites: Cameron Monaghan teases the cutting-edge visuals of Tron: Ares. Monaghan said:

“I think this one, in a very similar way, is going to really push forward what can be done,
from a visual perspective.
I would sometimes even come in on days I wasn’t working, because that set was really amazing.
A lot of
the practical sets were pretty phenomenal,
and I would love to go look at those as well.”

Look for Jeff Bridges’ return to The Grid when
Tron: Ares
drops in theaters on October 10, 2025.
