Summary

  • Exciting news for
    Gavin and Stacey
fans: the final episode is set to air on Christmas Day 2024!
  • Big questions left unanswered since the 2019 special: will Smithy say yes to Nessa, and what really happened on that fishing trip?
  • Get ready for the last ever episode to provide closure and wrap up lingering mysteries for fans of the beloved show.

In a tidy bit of news, Gavin and Stacey is officially returning for the final time. It was announced in February this year that Ruth Jones and James Cordon, who both wrote and starred in the show (alongside Matthew Horne and Joanna Page as the titular couple), were working on one last episode to bring the show to a close.

James Cordon shared the news in an Instagram post showing off the cover of the finished script, titled Gavin and Stacey: the finale. Along with the photo, the caption read:

“Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James ❤️”

Gavin and Stacey first aired on BBC way back in 2007 and told the story of the long-distance relationship between the titular pair – with one living in Essex, England and the other in Barry, Wales. The show ran for three seasons between 2007 and 2010, and won three BAFTA awards during its network run. The series returned for a Christmas Special in 2019, which fans thought would be the finale. That episode left over 17 million viewers on the edge of their seats with a shocking cliffhanger ending. Cordon and Jones have confirmed that the 2024 Christmas Special will be the final ever episode of the show, and fans are hoping to finally get answers.

Gavin and Stacey Left Lots of Unanswered Questions

The biggest question fans have after the show’s 2019 return is if Smithy (James Corden) said yes to Nessa (Ruth Jones). The last episode ended with Nessa finally proposing to Smithy, after 3 seasons of their on-and-off relationship (which resulted in the pair having a child, Neil the Baby), but cut to the credits before audiences heard Smithy’s answer. But the 2019 episode also threw another spanner in the works, when it introduced audiences to Smithy’s new girlfriend, Sonia. Although Sonia quickly departed from their visit to Barry, their relationship hadn’t technically ended.

Another question fans have is regarding Bryn (Rob Brydon)’s sexuality. Throughout the show, Bryn never explicitly comes out as gay, but it is implied through his longing looks at Mick Shipman (Larry Lamb). Whilst appearing on the Table Manners podcast, Brydon said, “there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to say anything because I think it should be in the mind of the audience.” But the actor did admit he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Bryn did come out as gay.

However, the most important question fans have demanded answers to since the show’s very first episode, is what actually happened on that fishing trip? The mystery has been a long-running joke in the series, and revolves around a fishing trip between Bryn and Jason West (Robert Wilfort), which took place years before the show’s story began. The only hints fans have been given is that: they were on their knees, it was illegal in the United Kingdom, it defied the laws of gravity, and they only did it because they were cold. Whatever it was, it caused extreme embarrassment between both characters for years.
