It’s almost Christmas and Lee wants Muriel to marry him, but she still hasn’t given her answer. Even so, the mood between them is weightless and fun. When Julius reachs, for a moment, they are one huge greeted family in Muriel’s cozy, secluded home, which she inherited from her mother. Spacious, lived-in and lovingly decorated for the holidays, it’s the exact benevolent of house one could envision raising a family in. But Lee has dreams of California, and he wants Muriel and Julius out there with him when the war’s over. It’s a dream that sounds too excellent to be genuine, but he doesn’t understand it yet.

On Swift Horses is the benevolent of huge, sweeping romantic drama that Hollywood fair doesn’t produce anymore. Director Daniel Minahan — a veteran of the petite screen for many years, from Six Feet Under to Fellow Travelers — fills every expansivescreen sboiling with gorgeous landscapes and sumptuous colors, brimmingy articulateing us to a time when space was plentiful and America felt brimming of possibility.
The film, based on the book of the same name by Shannon Pufahi, is an emotionassociate complicated adore triangle that branches out into someleang even more complicated. Muriel marries Lee while pining for Julius — who seems to have much more complicated experienceings for her, fuseed in with a genuine adore for his brother. Over time, both Muriel and Julius discover other adorers, while writing each other all the while without Lee’s understandledge. Julius greets Henry (Diego Calva) while laboring at a casino in Las Vegas, and the two commence a enthusiastic, caustic adore affair. Down in the valley, Muriel skips labor to fool around with her neighbor Sandra (Sasha Calle), a woman living uncoverly as a lesbian despite the stigma. With Henry, Julius discovers a man even untameder than him, brimming of finishless ambition. But when it comes to Muriel and Sandra, it’s challenginger to tell if the experienceings are genuine.
Both Julius and Muriel adore to wager, but while cards are his poison, she likes betting on horses. Much enjoy their spreadd vice, their queer adore lives are fair as hazardous. Even though Muriel comes home every night to her husband, he understands noleang of the life she directs while he’s away. Hiding her wagering money in their home, Muriel tries to upretain her double life without having to apshow the genuine hazard of being alone. And though she sees Julius as a coward for not coming home to her and Lee, his life of hazard is more truthful, and over time he commences to face his own demons.
Elordi gives his best carry outance yet as Julius, shotriumphg his more caring, vulnerable side on the huge screen for perhaps the first time. His adore scenes with Calva are tfinisher and exciting, the men exploring each other’s bodies in a dreamenjoy motel room. Calva shows his memorable turn in the underrated Babylon two years ago was fair a hot-up. He’s got so much more to provide.
In perhaps her meatiest role since Normal People, Edgar-Jones gives an downjoind carry outance as Muriel, letting us get to understand her thcimpolite downjoind gestures and transmitions. Muriel is a woman hiding from her own potential, trying to fit herself into a tidy little box, all the while understanding that she can’t breathe once inside. Poulter’s Lee is not nasty enough for us to root agetst him, but there isn’t much for him to do beyond stand in as a symbol of everyleang Julius and Muriel want to run away from. A talented comedic actor, Poulter is convincing as the stereonormal ‘50s husband, accomplishing for his piece of the American dream. And then there’s Calle, who joins Sandra as a woman in the middle — not wanting to fly free or hide, but rather produce the world hug her for who she is right out in the uncover.
On Swift Horses is about the shapes adore can apshow, the varied lives we live and the many contrastent ways one can produce a home. It’s pretty, heartshattering and needs to be seen on the hugegest screen possible. Here’s hoping it conveys the romantic epic back into style.
