Jack Black is having quite a run of success right now, and he would like to see that continue with a return to one of his most iconic roles with a sequel to 2003’s School of Rock. During the 20th anniversary celebration of the comedy movie last year, Black hinted that he would definitely consider reprising his role as Dewey Finn and was “thinking about” the possibility of heading back to class.

Black provided the voice of Bowser in last year’s second-highest grossing movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will be seen in the new Borderlands movie, and was recently added to the cast of the upcoming Minecraft adaptation alongside Jason Momoa. Currently, Black is riding high in the box office charts thanks to Kung Fu Panda 4, in which he reprises his voice role as Po. However, all of that, plus his revelation that he is expecting to release a new Tenacious D album with long-time collaborator Kyle Gass soon, is still not enough for the energetic actor.

While speaking to JOE about Kung Fu Panda 4, Black was asked about the chances of seeing School of Rock 2 become a reality. He said:

“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo. You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius, and we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”

School of Rock is Still One of Jack Black’s Best Movies

Currently holding his highest Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes for a movie that doesn’t involve him cameoing as himself, School of Rock is certainly not one of Black’s biggest blockbuster hits, but was immensely popular at the time of its release, and has continued to build a following in the last two decades.

School of Rock sees recently fired rock band member Dewey posing as a prep school substitute teacher in order to make himself some much-needed money. While his class of students don’t excel in every way, he discovers that they have musical talents that could help him prove himself in a local band contest and return to his musical roots. While the outcome is predictable, the movie is no less fun for it, and Black manages to bring real energy to the role, as well as believability, thanks to his own musical experience.

How Jack Black Made School of Rock So Iconic

The blurry lines between Black and his character makes School of Rock achieve one of the best character-actor fit in film history.

Whether Black will get the chance to revisit the character of Dewey is yet to be seen. Despite his enthusiasm to see something happen in that respect, there is currently no sequel in development. If Black and White do manage to find the time in their busy schedules to collaborate again, then it would certainly be a legacy sequel that many fans would be more than happy to see come to fruition.

School of Rock
