Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”

While the actor has used a black marker to disguise certain words in the image, he has left just enough for fans to come to the exciting assumption that Spaceballs 2 is now in development. If you lean towards your screen with your eyes squinted inquisitively, you can just about make out that below “Based on Characters Created by…” is written the name “Mel.” Which can only be comedy legend Mel Brooks. The first line of the first page is also visible and contains the words “EXT. STAR FIELD.” So, really, what else could it be?

Fans have since taken to the comment section to share their excitement over the likelihood that it’s Spaceballs 2, with one saying “I guess this must be the long awaited sequel to Spaceballs, right?” while another adds “Please be spaceballs!”

Spaceballs Remains a Beloved Mel Brooks Comedy Classic

Released back in 1987, Spaceballs was co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks, and takes satirical aim at the Star Wars franchise alongside other well-known sci-fi properties in the way that only a Mel Brooks parody can. Starring Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, Spaceballs takes place in a distant galaxy on the titular planet and follows renegade space pilot Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf as they attempt to rescue Princess Vespa, who has been kidnapped by the evil Dark Helmet.

While the movie was met with mixed reviews from critics upon release, it has since become a fan-favorite and remains one of the most iconic outings in Mel Brooks’ cinematic arsenal. A sequel has been on the cards since as far back as 2013 (perhaps even further), with Rick Moranis even pitching the superb title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II at the time.

Josh Gad Offers Disappointing Update on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Reboot

Rick Moranis is returning for a new Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movie, but Josh Gad might have some bad news about the project.

Mel Brooks himself addressed the idea of a sequel back in 2015, saying that he hoped Rick Moranis would return.

“I was thinking about Spaceballs the other day. In Spaceballs , in the movie, Bill Pullman says to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says ‘Do you think we’ll ever meet again?’ and I say ‘Well, I don’t know… maybe in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money .’ And I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out – maybe a couple of months later – I’d have a big weekend, you know?”

While Moranis has largely been absent from acting for the last several decades, he did recently reprise the role of Dark Helmet for a cameo in the sitcom The Goldbergs. Could Spaceballs 2 be the beloved actor’s long-awaited comeback?
