Inside Out 2 Forecast to Make Massive Moolah Over Its Opening Weekend

Could those overwhelming emotions turn the summer movie season inside out? It’s no secret the 2024 summertime hasn’t been the most productive or profitable in terms of box office returns. However, Amy Poehler’s Joy and Phyllis Smith’s Sadness are returning this Friday to the big screen for the highly anticipated sequel, Inside Out 2. And at the time of this writing, the follow-up to 2015’s Inside Out is forecast to make $135 million worldwide over its opening weekend (per Deadline).

Inside Out 2 is predicted to make around $85 million domestically, which would be the best opening of the 2024 summer movie season. Internationally, the “emotional” animated feature film is forecast to make another $50 million.

Those numbers fall in line with the long-range forecast, courtesy of Boxoffice Pro, which predicted that Inside Out 2 could do somewhere between $80 million and $115 million just at the domestic box office alone. Even on the low end, Inside Out 2 would mark the biggest box office triumph of both May and June. To date, the best moneymakers of the year belong to two films that debuted back in March. Dune: Part Two made $82.5 million, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire brought in $80 million over its own opening weekend.

Amy Poehler Says Inside Out Is ‘Best Film I’ve Ever Been In’

The first reactions for Inside Out 2 are in, and they’re declaring the latest Pixar production is a “masterpiece.” Amy Poehler once again represents the Joy in Riley Andersen, but the Saturday Night Live alumna can also see way beyond just one sequel. Poehler also speaks to the fact that Inside Out is “probably the best film I’ve ever been in.” The actress told Empire magazine:

Fans might find it surprising, but it turns out that Adam Sandler’s drama Uncut Gems actually inspired Inside Out 2 to some degree. Hopefully, that’s where the comparisons end, though. The Pixar sequel definitely wants to follow in the footsteps of the 2015 film where the box office is concerned. Uncut Gems only made $50 million theatrically after all.
