Financial statements released on Friday unveiled a significant setback for Disney as “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” failed to cover its costs at the box office. The movie, starring Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford as the legendary adventurer, incurred a staggering $134.2 million loss in comparison to its ticket sales revenue.

Released in June last year, the film showcased a gripping narrative centered around Indiana Jones’ quest to retrieve an ancient time-traveling artifact before it falls into the wrong hands. Notable for its thrilling train chase scene featuring a digitally de-aged Harrison Ford, the production of the movie was not without its expenses. Post-production work alone accounted for $79 million (£62.6 million), catapulting the total budget to a monumental $387.2 million (£306.7 million).

Despite the blockbuster budget, critics were quick to criticize “Dial of Destiny,” garnering a modest 70% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly, audiences were more forgiving, giving the film an 88% rating. However, this goodwill did not translate into box office success, with ticket sales falling short of covering production costs.

Industry data from Box Office Mojo revealed that “Dial of Destiny” grossed $384 million, representing only 49% of the earnings of its predecessor, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” The lukewarm reception of the 2008 film adds to the disappointment surrounding “Dial of Destiny’s” lackluster performance, highlighting the challenges faced by even established franchises in the ever-competitive film industry.
