Actress Kiersey Clemons earned critical acclaim for performances in films like Dope, but she’s best known for genre films like The Flash. In a new interview with MovieWeb’s Will Sayre, Clemons discussed how some high-profile roles turned into lost opportunities, including playing Iris West and a role in the failed Zorro reboot.

Clemons is currently on a media tour for her film The Young Wife, but in her interview, she also discussed her experiences with the DC Extended Universe and Jonás Cuarón’s Zorro film Z, which remains stuck in development hell. She summed up those roles in a single sentence:

I have bad luck with superhero movies.

Kiersey Clemons, Zorro, and the Snyderverse

Movie fans are likely well aware of the drama surrounding Zack Snyder’s DC films, in which Clemons had a promising role as Iris West, before the DC cinematic universe imploded. Far fewer, however, are familiar with the planned Zorro reboot film, which Clemons was set to star in.

In 2018, Jonás Cuarón, the writer of Gravity and son of director Alfonso Cuarón, was set to direct Z, an updating of the Zorro legend with Gael García Bernal in the lead role. Set in an apocalyptic future, Bernal would don the iconic swashbuckler’s mask to bring hope and justice to a new Western frontier. Clemons was set to star as Zee, Zorro’s sidekick, according to reports.

For unknown reasons, the film never went into production, and Clemons herself is unsure of its future. “I hadn’t thought about it in a long time,” she admitted. “And the other day, I was like, ‘I was supposed to be in Zorro!’ I have no idea, to be honest. I should ask somebody… What I will say is: If it happens, I would be so excited… I love the story and the role.”

Exclusive: Monarch Cast Get Personal About Their Characters’ Legacy of Monsters

Kiersey Clemons, Anna Sawai, and Ren Watabe discuss their characters’ issues ahead of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ finale.

In the case of 2017’s Justice League, Clemons’ initial misfortune turned to redemption. Her scene as Iris West, alongside Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen/Flash, was cut from the final film when Joss Whedon took over the director’s chair from Zack Snyder. It was, however, restored for 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka the “SnyderCut.”

Clemons’ character had a much larger role in 2023’s The Flash, but the film’s box office failure, the end of “Snyderverse,” and the reboot of the DC cinematic universe likely ended any chance of future appearances. Still, she enjoys being a part of event films with large fan bases. She told MovieWeb:

“I do enjoy being a part of these, like, big worlds because of the fan base. They get so excited, and I think that’s really cool.
I love going to Comic-Con. I love meeting everybody.
I think that the ones that I’m signed on to right now will probably be it . I will enjoy them while I’m here, for sure.”

Clemons’ latest series, the Apple TV+ Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, was renewed for season two, although her status in the series is up in the air.
