‘I Don’t Feel Good About That’

'I Don't Feel Good About That'

Summary

  • Angela Kinsey spoke out against stereotypical jokes in
    The Office
    , reflecting her Christian values.
  • Greg Daniels listened to Kinsey’s concerns and removed a scene that she found offensive.
  • A reboot of
    The Office
is in the works, featuring new characters and set in the same universe.

The Office star Angela Kinsey, who portrays Angela Martin in the show, recently opened up about certain lines she felt uncomfortable saying during production of the series. Angela Martin has been a mainstay of the series since its first episode. Working in accounts, along with Oscar (Oscar Nuñez) and Kevin (Brian Baumgartner), Angela was the most straight-laced employee of Dunder Mifflin, who quickly became a love interest for Rainn Wilson’s Dwight Schrute.

Kinsley recently spoke with her former cast mate, Rainn Wison, on his podcast, Soul Boom. During the discussion, the pair talked about the actress’ Christian upbringing, and how it affected her portrayal of a stereotypically “uptight Christian” on the show. Kinsley said there was one scene she couldn’t do because of how it represented her faith, and divulged the conversation she had with The Office‘s co-creator, Greg Daniels, to have it altered.

“There were one or two times in which there would be a joke written for her that I thought was just really stereotypical, maybe one note. I like to think of her as a full, well-rounded person. I do remember I remember there was a particular storyline between Angela and Oscar, where Angela was being super judge-y. I never went up to Greg about any joke, but there was a joke at Oscar’s expense, and I went up to Greg [Daniels] and I was like, ‘I can’t.'”

“I just was like, ‘I don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel good about that. I don’t feel like that’s what Jesus represented to me.”

After discussing the scene with Greg Daniels, Kinsley said that he responded very positively to her criticism.

“And he was like, ‘OK.’ And he heard me, and he took the joke out. And the episode, it was ‘Gay Witch Hunt,’ had so many already. But that’s the one pivotal moment I remember being like, OK, this is feeling like a stereotype and very one note. I feel like she has more depth than that.”

The Office is Now Getting a Reboot…Sort Of

The Office (US) ran for 9 seasons between 2005 and 2013, winning 5 Primetime Emmys, and quickly garnering a reputation as a cult-classic series which still earns frequent re-watches from its die-hard fan base. Like any great series, fans were devastated when it finally ended in 2013, and have been desperate for more Dunder Mifflin silliness ever since.

The Office is still one of the most watched series on television. Let’s look at the greatest cold openings of the show, ranked.

A reboot of The Office was first announced in 2023, with Greg Daniels returning to oversee the series. Speaking to The Wrap in November 2023, Daniels denied the new show’s status as a “reboot.”

“I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

The updated version of The Office will feature brand-new characters, with a story set in the same universe as NBC’s hit comedy. The new show also got an exciting update recently, when it was confirmed Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore would be starring in the series. Gleeson has established himself as a mainstay in Hollywood, starring in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, and the Star Wars sequel trilogy as General Hux. Meanwhile, Sabrina Impacciatore recently earned herself an Emmy nomination for her starring role in HBO’s hit show The White Lotus.
