Hungary star Barnabas Varga treated behind screen after sickening collision | Football | Sport

Hungary star Barnabas Varga was stretchered off of the pitch after sustaining a serious head injury during his side’s Euro 2024 clash with Scotland on Sunday night. The forward collided with goalkeeper Angus Gunn and fell unconscious upon impact with the ground.

After a cross was delivered from the left, Varga attempted to latch onto the delivery but crashed into the on-rushing Gunn, as well as a Scottish defender Anthony Ralston.

The Ferencvaros forward fell heavily to the ground and appeared to instantly go out cold, with players flocking to help him into the recovery position and urge medical staff to enter the field and provide treatment.

Hungarian players, who quickly realised the extent of the incident, quickly grew frustrated with the pace in which their teammate was being treated.

After the initial medics attended Varga, more members of staff rushed onto the pitch to raise up blankets and ensure that the ex-Paks had a level of privacy and prevent the crowd, who had simmered into silence, from watching the distressing scenes unfold.

A stretcher was quickly demanded by the medical staff, with some Hungary players physically rushing to the touchline to push some of the medics forward and highlight that they felt that they were not moving quickly enough given that their teammate was still motionless on the ground.

BBC commentator Steve Wilson said that Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai could be seen ‘in tears’ whilst watching Varga receive medical treatment.

The forward was eventually stretchered off of the pitch and away for further treatment, with play returning 10 minutes later in an incredibly eery atmosphere.
