Hulk Star Jennifer Connelly Would Follow Up Dark Matter’s Multiverse Story With MCU Role

Hulk Star Jennifer Connelly Would Follow Up Dark Matter's Multiverse Story With MCU Role

Summary

  • Jennifer Connelly is open to joining the MCU, inspired by her husband’s positive experience working with Marvel.
  • Connelly’s role in Ang Lee’s 2003
    Hulk
film did not hinder her career, making her open to returning to the superhero genre.
  • Connelly’s new Apple TV+ series,
    Dark Matter
, explores the multiverse concept without the pressure of fan expectations.

Jennifer Connelly would love to jump into the MCU, two decades after playing the role of Betty Ross in Ang Lee’s underrated Marvel movie, Hulk. The Oscar-winner expressed her willingness to take on a role in the current Marvel franchise while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about her new Apple TV+ series, Dark Matter – which also stars Joel Edgerton and delves into its own multiverse of madness.

While the 2003 Hulk film is often remembered as one of the less successful comic book adaptations of its time – although some would say it was actually ahead of its time – Connelly’s performance alongside Eric Bana (Bruce Banner/Hulk) became one of the many diverse roles that the actress has taken on in her four decade-long career. The film may have not hit the mark with critics, but Connelly’s career certainly didn’t suffer because of her part in it. Now, discussing whether she would consider returning to the world of superheroes, it seems that Connelly would love to return to that world. She said:

“I think that they [Marvel] make great films and my husband [Paul Bettany aka the MCU’s Vision] has had such a fantastic time working with all of them, and they have such a great group of actors working with them. I would absolutely do it.”

Of course, for those who know everything there is to know about the MCU, Connelly’s desire to be in a Marvel movie is perhaps a little odd, as she already had a role in Tom Holland’s first solo outing, Spider-Man: Homecoming. While she did not appear on screen – and perhaps for this reason doesn’t consider it a real role – the actress voiced “Karen”, the voice assistant programmed into Peter Parker’s Spider-Suit by Tony Stark.

Jennifer Connelly Outplays the Marvel Multiverse in Dark Matter

While many fans have struggled to keep up with the amount of multiverse crossovers in movies right now, Jennifer Connelly’s new Apple TV+ series brings the concept to the small screen. The Marvel multiverse has been a mixed bag of successes and disappointments, mostly thanks to astronomically high fan expectations. However, in Dark Matter, there are no long-lost characters to make expected appearances, or well-known universes opening up for long-term fans, and that has given the series a definite edge.

Dark Matter Review: Existential Sci-Fi Drama Succeeds with Romance and Thrills

Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga lead Dark Matter, a romantic sci-fi thriller based on Blake Crouch’s book.

Dark Matter sees Connelly taking on numerous different versions of her character, which was something she had a lot of fun with. In her exclusive interview with MovieWeb, the actress explained how each version of her character became different in both subtle and obvious ways depending on the element of the story.

“Some of the choices were kind of driven by necessities of the narrative, right? So like, there’s a scene where he comes, and you have to kind of believe that he’s made it home, so she’s gonna look just different enough that you kind of get it but not so different that you’re immediately tipped off, so factors like that were considered when we were making those choices. Or like a scene where he comes and his wife is really ill, and we wanted it to feel like this could be his wife, you know?”

Dark Matter
is currently holding a decent 76% Tomatometer score, and a more impressive 80% audience approval rate. The series is streaming now on Apple TV+.
