The premiere episode of House of the Dragon season 2 reveals a shocking detail about Aegon’s dream, which sets up an important scene for two Targaryen characters. The series premiere of House of the Dragon concluded with a surprising reveal about the history of House Targaryen, namely the existence of Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire dream. As King Viserys reveals, Aegon the Conqueror had a prophetic dream foreseeing the rise of the White Walkers and the end of all humanity unless a Targaryen sitting on the Iron Throne could unite the realm against them. Of course, this prophecy would be realized in Game of Thrones’ ending.

When Viserys told Rhaenyra about Aegon’s dream and the burden that came with its knowledge, he revealed that this secret has been passed down through every Targaryen king and their heir since the Conqueror’s reign. Following Viserys’ death in House of the Dragon season 1, Rhaenyra was the final Targaryen with knowledge of Aegon’s dream until mentioning it to Daemon in the finale. With Rhaenyra now the only crowned Targaryen who understands the truth of Aegon’s dream, a scene in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1 reveals another surprising fact about her duty to the prophecy.

House of the Dragon’s season 2 premiere marks the Game of Thrones franchise’s triumphant return to Winterfell, and more notably, the Wall. Lord Cregan Stark brings Rhaenyra’s eldest son and heir, Jacaerys Velaryon, to the Wall during his visit to the North, where the two discuss the purpose of the Wall and what it keeps out – not Wildlings, but “death.” Jacaerys’ response to Cregan’s White Walkers reference is a look of surprise and confusion, which means that Rhaenyra hasn’t told Jace about Aegon’s dream as of House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1.

Viserys emphasized the importance of Aegon’s dream being passed down to the heir to the Iron Throne, so it’s shocking that Rhaenyra hadn’t told Jace about the Targaryen prophecy upon being crowned the Black Queen. Despite how crucial it is to pass along this information, Rhaenyra likely hasn’t told Jacaerys because she hasn’t had the time. Directly after being crowned, Rhaenyra sent her sons as envoys and was still working out politics with the Greens, so she was more focused on the urgency of building alliances than informing Jace of Aegon’s dream. Upon Jace’s subsequent return home, the two are overcome with their grief regarding Lucerys Velaryon’s death.

Why Jacaerys Needs To Learn About Aegon’s Dream In House Of The Dragon

Aegon’s dream is at risk of dying with Rhaenyra

As it stands for the Black Party in House of the Dragon season 2, Jacaerys Velaryon is Rhaenyra’s heir to the Iron Throne. Consequently, she is entrusted with passing on Aegon’s dream to him should he inherit the throne upon her death. Given the fact that the Targaryen Greens and Blacks are now headed for war in House of the Dragon season 2, Rhaenyra needs to tell Jacaerys about Aegon’s dream urgently. Her life is in constant danger while at war with her half-brother Aegon II, and if she dies, Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire dream dies with her.

New episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 release Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
