Harry Potter Star Daniel Radcliffe Addresses a Possible Cameo in the Max Reboot

Harry Potter Star Daniel Radcliffe Addresses a Possible Cameo in the Max Reboot

Summary

  • Daniel Radcliffe talks a possible cameo in Max’s
    Harry Potter
    TV reboot.
  • Radcliffe doesn’t rule out a cameo but feels that passing the torch moments won’t be necessary in the new series.
  • Warner Bros. has announced that the new
    Harry Potter
series is expected to begin airing in 2026, but details about the project remain scarce.

Max’s Harry Potter reboot is looking to re-invigorate J.K. Rowling’s iconic Wizarding World with some fresh blood, following the incredible eight-film franchise which ran between 2001 and 2011. Warner Bros.’ film series, which starred Daniel Radcliffe in the eponymous role, became a global phenomenon, and the actor is still synonymous with the role. Radcliffe’s association with Potter is so deep that fans are desperate to see the actor cameo in Max’s new series. Radcliffe has addressed these rumors and requests multiple times. Speaking to E! News, the actor said “Like the rest of the world, [I’m] very excited to watch as an audience member.”

The actor said that it would feel strange returning, either as an older version of Harry, or in a separate role, because he is so closely connected to the character. Radcliffe also believed that the new show’s creators (who have yet to be selected) might not want him in the new series. Radcliffe continued:

“I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break. And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it.”

Harry Potter’s own Professor Sprout, the incompatable Miriam Margolyes, has given a blunt assessment of the franchise’s older fans.

Radcliffe re-iterated this point again in an interview with ComicBook.com last year. The actor again said that the new showrunners “will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere.” In his answer, Radcliffe didn’t completely shut down the option. However, he did make it clear that any passing of the torch type moments won’t be necessary in the new show. The actor said:

“So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

When Will We See Max’s Harry Potter Series?

When the new show was announced by Warner Bros. at the Max streaming event in 2023, the internet went wild with theories, demands, and criticism. The news was also met with an understandable dose of backlash, predominantly targeted at the franchise’s creator, J.K. Rowling, following the author’s alleged transphobia and endless string of controversial comments.

However, news about the current project has been eerily silent since. No executive producers or showrunner have been selected yet. Deadline has confirmed that Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour), and Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) are the finalists among the creatives who were brought in to pitch ideas to Max. Production should be moving ahead soon though as, according to Warner Bros. Discover CEO, David Zaslav, the series is expected to begin airing in 2026.

To many fans, WB’s original Harry Potter films, starring Radcliffe, Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) are still lorded as one of the best cinematic fantasy franchises. Re-watching the film series has become an annual tradition for even the most casual of fans, especially around the Holiday period.

Max’s
Harry Potter
series is expected to release in 2026. The original eight
Harry Potter
movies – and the
Fantastic Beasts
spin-off films – are also streaming on Max.
