George R.R. Martin Cryptically Teases Elden Ring Movie Adaptation

George R.R. Martin Cryptically Teases Elden Ring Movie Adaptation

Summary

  • George R.R. Martin offers suspicious response to rumored involvement in
    Elden Ring
    adaptation.
  • Elden Ring
would pose unique challenges for filmmakers due to its difficult gameplay and numerous boss fights.
  • Video game adaptations are becoming a new trend in Hollywood, with many upcoming projects, but
    Elden Ring
stands out as a unique challenge.

George R.R. Martin is acting suspiciously coy about the potential of an Elden Ring movie. Fans of FromSoftware’s beloved (and extremely difficult) video game have been calling for an adaptation since it first released in 2022. George R.R. Martin – best known for creating Game of Thrones – worked alongside the production studio and created the intricate and rich lore of the game’s world. Alongside their begging for the next Game of Thrones book, fans have been pestering Martin about a potential Elden Ring adaptation for years now. The author recently took to his blog to address these rumors.

While Martin denied any involvement with any kind of adaptation, he could have tried to sound a little more convincing, especially for such an esteemed writer. Martin’s post read:

“Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”

The Elden Ring Franchise Could Become the Next Lord of the Rings

George R.R. Martin’s involvement in creating Elden Ring is just one of the few reasons the game could become the next Lord of the Rings.

Rumors of a potential Elden Ring adaptation truly began to spread when FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, spoke to The Guardian about his openness to a potential movie or series based on the game. Miyazaki admitted that he did not have the technical knowledge to venture into the medium of film. But, with the right storyteller, he would be open to producing a movie. Miyazaki said:

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play.”

Elden Ring Would Be a New Kind of Video Game Adaptation

While the superhero genre has taken something of a back seat critically in recent years, video game adaptations have become the new trend in Hollywood. Dozens of upcoming adaptations are in the works, transforming everything from hit franchises like The Legend of Zelda to long-forgotten 90s classics like Golden Axe. But Elden Ring would be a unique challenge for any filmmaker to try and adapt into a movie.

FromSoftware’s games have a reputation for being notoriously hard. Not content with adding an ‘easy mode’ (a major debate in the gaming world), Elden Ring forces players to ‘get good’ at the game, as players jump from boss fight to boss fight. While it’s safe to say that the incredible boss fights would make for a grand spectacle on the big screen, the sheer quantity of them would cause issues when trying to produce a script for a movie. To strip Elden Ring of its boss fights would remove the core essence of the game, but to only showcase massive battles removes any semblance of story from the adaptation. With this in mind, it’s perhaps unsurprising to learn that no filmmakers are currently attached to the rumored Elden Ring adaptation.
