Game of Thrones Spin-off 10,000 Ships Gets Exciting Update From George R.R. Martin

    spin-offs face production obstacles, but
    10,000 Ships

  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
    upcoming alongside
    House of the Dragon
Season 2; other spin-offs now in limbo.

Numerous Game of Thrones spin-off shows have gone in and out of production hell in the years following the show’s 8th and final season, with several being canceled outright. One such series was the planned 10,000 Ships prequel. While many fans thought the project was dead in the water (pardon the pun), Game of Thrones creator, George R.R. Martin recently confirmed the project is still in development, with a new lead writer on board.

George R.R. Martin shared the news on his blog (anything to avoid writing The Winds of Winter) expressing his excitement about the upcoming project, and the talent leading the creative overhaul. A new pilot for 10,000 Ships is being written by recent Pulitzer Prize winning author, Eboni Booth. In his blog, Martin wrote:

“When not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar.”

Booth is a multi-award winning playwright, with her most recent, Primary Trust, winning her this year’s Pulitzer Prize. Martin expressed his excitement about working with Booth on the new show, and teased what fans can expect to see in the long-delayed series. He continued:

“We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”

What Other Game of Thrones Spin-Offs Are on the Horizon?

The line-up of new Game of Thrones spin-offs and prequels can be a bit confusing. At the height of the franchise’s popularity, new projects were being greenlit every other week. But following Season 8’s divisive reception, many of those projects were put on hold. The next spin-off show to hit our screens is the second season of House of the Dragon. Set 300 years before the core show, this prequel is building up to the Dance of the Dragons, one of the bloodiest civil wars in Westeros’ history. As well as being a fantastic show in its own right, House of the Dragon has helped reignite fans’ passion and optimism about the franchise’s future.

House of the Dragon Series End Teased By Showrunner: ‘I Think We Do Have a Planned End’

House of the Dragon’s showrunner knows exactly when the Game of Thrones prequel will end.

Following House of the Dragon, the next spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is expected to be released sometime in 2025. This series, based on one of Martin’s novellas, was announced in April 2023, but saw its production halted by the joint WGA and Sag-AFTRA strikes last year. The series is set in-between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and follows Dunk (Peter Claffey) a squire who dons the armor of his recently killed hedge knight to enter a tournament, posing as Ser Duncan the Tall.

Aegon’s Conquest is another prequel series that appears to be moving into production at some speed. The show is being written by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) and tells the story of Aegon I Targaryen and his war campaign to unite the Seven Kingdoms.

Other spin-off projects like the John Snow series, Robert’s Rebellion, Flea bottom, and Bloodmoon are currently in production limbo, with many believing them to be officially canceled.

House of the Dragon
